Yes, this is a jab at how incredulously oblivious Twilight can be.

Nothing that you ranted about dismisses the fact that Twilight has intentionally hurt a child.
Would it kill you to stop trying to stir shit once in a while?
LALALALALA! i can’t read you! LALALALALALA!
*runs away from the overanalysing*
Oh, I don’t care, mind you. I really enjoy Tom and Jerry.
The only reason I brought it up was to demonstrate why some people get flustered by the physical humor inflicted on Spike.
Frequent slap-stick just works a lot better in the Tom and Jerry universe than it does in the MLP universe. It is mostly because 1: the MLP universe is a much less mean-spirited one and 2: funny slap-stick usually is a direct result of the bad choices made by the person on the receiving end, which is what happens in Tom and Jerry all the time.
An example of good slap-stick in MLP was Twilight in Feeling Pinkie Keen. She was being an obsessive stalker of her friend, which resulted in her misfortunes. It was well-paced and it felt appropriate, because of her behavior throughout the episode.
On the other hand, Spike often appears to be the butt of physical jokes for no reason. Since he doesn’t really have anything going for him and is usually seen helping Twilight, people just feel really bad for him.
It is more satisfying to see Spike on the receiving end of slap-stick in episodes like Just For Sidekicks, when he’s just being a prick throughout the episode, than it is to see him get knocked around while doing his job as an assistant.
I’m not bothered by it, although some of the jokes are pretty harsh, like Twilight flinging him against the wall for tickling her.
Jerry ain’t no nice guy and Tom often has good reasons to try to get him, but he’s still an asshole.
Tom? An asshole? No, most of the time it’s Jerry that is the jerk. Tom is doing what he’s supposed to. Jerry is a pest who’s taking the food from his owner or otherwise causing trouble. Jerry also often seems to just like screwing with Tom.
So, yeah, the pic here’s taking “thoughtless Twilight” up a notch or two for comedy effect and pushing it into the Spikeabuse realm. There’s no problem with that once you realize where the joke’s coming from.
She did not destroy intelligences of pinkie clones (who were merely automatons with complex goal-oriented and highly adaptable behavior just like you and me in my opinion) either. It is still bad how show portray some things not carefully enough and leave too much space for unfortunate implications because for this show it is an important issue.
Thank you. :)
I didn’t really think about how this scene would play out, because I honestly don’t believe Twilight would let Spike get this unhealthy.
Also I imagine story from this picture will result into Fluttershy going into ubermensch “only maximization of common wellbeing of all creatures does matter. Ponies and their laws don’t matter” mode and steal Spike (like she did with Philomena).
yes
They are not meant to be taken seriously
yes
But fim would be significantly better without moments like this because they hurt and undermine its atmosphere too much, and enjoyability of this show is significantly dependent on consistency of its atmosphere (its “feel”).
Rule of funny is not an excuse to everything
If something is a funny or cool thing that does not mean it would make any story better. In some stories it would be just too much out of place so it would make everything less enjoyable despite being funny and cool by itself. Having main characters of Sherlock Holmes novels fight robot dinosaurs from space would be funny cool and bad. The books would be better without such moments because they contradict and undermine style and atmosphere of the books too much.
It is possible to treat anything as rule of funny. Abuse, racism anything. In some shows this would be not bad but some shows would be better without it. Fim could humans and Twilight being murderously racist towards them. There could be a gag about her killing random humans for no reason and it could have no significance to plot and all character could not react to this in any way and Twilight could be treated as positive character. Would this make show worse? Well obviously.
It is a good thing to analyze what make shows better or worse for you personally or overall and criticize its downsides because it could help to select good entertainment for you or for others in future. Seeing how authors sometimes look at fandoms opinion it could even make show better.
This picture is good, its good that people say that Twilight could be seen as a child abuser without much of a stretch.
Not caring about anything, not taking anything seriously and trying to enjoy everything you get without judging and analyzing isn’t always the best thing to do.
It’s been, like, three years since I’ve seen a Spongebob episode. O_O
You seem upset.
“You guys have no idea how real abuse with your siblings is like!”
I busted my brother’s eyebrow on a metal bathtub, he dislocated the bones of my left hand, I punched a window that he was pressing his face against and broke it, he and I broke at least 15 table lamps. Each of those examples being individual brawls he and I had, the lamps 15 separate cases at least. That’s not to count the other fights that didn’t lead to serious injury.
Or incidents of humiliation, damage of each other’s property, and so forth. It was all rather abusive and wrong, you silly chap.
I appreciate what you’re trying to do here, but you might be better off if you just ignore them. Nothing you say is going to change their minds; most bronies, it seems, have at least one area in which they take the show more seriously than it was meant to be taken, and can’t apply “Rule of Funny” to that area. (Mine’s the use of mid-to-late-20th-century technology.)
But people complain why too much about “ABUSE!” where there isn’t any. Each time Spike got abused it was justified with him being a prick, insensetive, a greddy asshole or it was just him misunderstanding stuff.
Twi never ignored Spike. When he asked about his parents she was honest with him, when he said he had to work for AJ she was IN THE ZONE READING A BOOK and he should have known that she doesn’t listen to him, Twi/Rare and RD went after him when he had the crazy idea to go on a journey to be a true dragon and almost ended up being toasted by dragon teens, AJ was supernice to him though he kept destroying her home and farm, Fluttershy always dotes for him when she sees that cute talking baby dragon and Pinkie always make great baked goods for Spike to eat, even with extra crunchy gems in them.
There’s no Spikeabuse, you people are just seeing things which aren’t there!
@Background Pony
If he was able to pull her there he can have pulled her away just as quickly, even a few centimetres would have meant that the plant pot and amboss would miss her and given him enough time to get her out of the dangerzone. He had the time to do so as it took several seconds after he run before the pot hit Twi. He saw it and his first thought was to save himself whereas whenever Twi sees danger coming she tries to keeps Spike out of it or at least to protect him like when she pushed him out of the Sombra Crystal trap before it could close them and the heart both in.
@Itsthinking
Just cause you guys feel sorry for him doesn’t mean you have to take that idotic Spike abuse idea seriously. Honestly, how can you guys look at those ten moments and forget all the hundreds ones where Twi and Spike clearly showed how much they love and care for each other? How can you ignore that Spike greatest fear isn’t being rejected by Rarity but by Twilight which she said she will never ever do? How can you ignore when Spike got “abused” it was for valid reasons like making Fluttershy cry cause he was an insensetive prick (THAT MONSTER!), for bragging with Twi’s magic talents though she didn’t wanted to be in the spotlight, for being a greedy asshole who almost destroyed all of Ponyville and so on? How can you all ignore the beauty of a relationship build on a trust and partnership which is unlikely of many real-life siblings?
Spike gets abused by Twi? Fuck that! You guys have no idea how real abuse with your siblings is like! I know that cause I’m fucking jealous of Spike and Twi! I wished I had that kind of relationship! Do you know how horrible it is to hide in your room and close the door while your brother beats on the door cause he wants to beat the shit out of you? Or how fucking sick it feels when you say something hurtful to your little brother and he runs into is room and cries in his bed?
Fuck you all! Seriosuly! Fuck! You! All! For taking this Spike abuse shit seriously! For tarnishing, bah, for THROWING SHIT at such a wonderful relationship which works out great through highs and low and which had a thousand times more highs than lows!
All you in the head fucked Spike abuse believers can go eat shit! Rewatch the show and write down all the moments Spike and Twi smiles at each other, hug each other, dependent on each other, work with each other, joke with each other, have fun together and so on! And then compare those hundreds moments with the ten ones you have the fucking gall to call “abuse” and be ashamed of yourself!
Fucking shit, I need air. Gawd, how can people take such a great drawn and fun making cause exaggerating picture of Twi and Spike’s relationship as A REAL AND HONEST TO CELESTIA PORTRAYAL OF THEIR SHOWN SHOWN RELATIONSHIP?!
So much stupidity is beyond me!
Bellasario’s Maxim: “Don’t analyze it too closely.”
And what would you have the child do in that situation? How exactly is a baby supposed to have “saved” Twilight from that?
Twilight and her friends routinely ignore, demean, and physically abuse Spike. As others have said here, he’s received an uneven amount of suffering for his station. Excuse us who point this out for showing empathy towards a child.
There’s also the matter of roles and age. Twilight is a grown mare who endangered herself by stalking Pinkie, while Spike is a baby dragon who came into Twilight’s service through questionable means, and is getting rewarded for his extreme loyalty and commitment (loyalty? An Element of Harmony?) by being made a punching bag.
