Crackpot theory. There will be yet another cast inclusion down the line. With Twilight Sparkle’s motif of her star going from a six pointed to an eight pointed star in both her EQG costume and castle imply there are to be eight members. For arguments sake neither Spike or Sunset Shimmer will count. The reason being that for Spike the six points never was meant as an indication as him as part of that group but rather the six ponies that represent harmony. Sunset Shimmer for two reasons. The first, supposedly she is never to make an appearance in FIM, second because it seems Starlight Glimmer was invented as her stand in.
However, Sunset Shimmer is important as she serves as a model for Starlight Glimmer’s growth. With the end of friendship games implying that she has transcended to an Alicorn via her human appearance so too will this serve as a model for Starlight Glimmer who will develop as a character and eventually ascend. However by doing so that will leave the racial equation even more unbalanced. Therefore another unicorn will be added for true balance. (2) Earth Ponies (2) Pegasus (2) Unicorns and (2) Alicorns.
To further support this theory, Twilight Sparkle mentioned at the beginning of season 5 that there were eight artifacts of meadowlark. Presumably if those later come into play then there will be an artifact per pony (Much like the EOH) which would again rule out Spike as the eigth.

Not the mark itself but if you look at both her costumes and the castle, it is continually shown to be eight pointed rather than six. Perhaps its nothing, but if Starlight Glimmer is indeed the seventh member, then Twilight’s cutie mark is no longer applicable. The change in motif would explain the direction the writers are going.

There needs to be an episode where they help a pony join the royal guards. Maybe then, we can get an incite to their details and customs. Which so far eludes us in the series. We’ve seen the Wonderbolts numerous times already.
Even better if there is an episode where they try to find a successor to Shining Armor’s position as the RG captain in Canterlot, since he’s now a fulltime co-ruler of the Crystal Empire soon to be father.

Spike is almost always written horribly. The only times he’s usually written well is when he’s either not the main focus or when he’s actually sharing Spotlight. Knowing the shows absolute bias to Starlight it’s probably going to be a Starlight overshadow Spike episode and the last thing this show needs is this stain overtaking what could be possibly Spike development.
