I’d say Celestia is the Goddess of Harmony.

I actually read all Mattatatta’s post. With Season 3 coming up my interest in the full pony back story has been rekindled.

So, along the lines of Exalted, where a primordial/yozi has multiple souls that make up his whole being? I kinda like that idea.

I’ve always theorised that the Elements of Harmony were created from the very souls of Pansy, Hurricane, Platinum, Clover the Clever, Smart Cookie, and Puddinghead, who were the first six pony friends in Equestria. As a result of being the first friends in Equestria, they probably became the leaders of new land, and a model for friendship and harmony between the three tribes as they all joined together under a single banner.
 
Expanding further upon that bit of headcanon, I also believe that each generation brings a new group of friends who shall become the new Bearers of the Elements of Harmony, and thus, the new rulers of Equestria. As each generation wields the Elements, they temporarily communicate with their ancestors, and leave a part of their own life bound to the Elements. So as time goes on, the Elements become stronger with the combined power of all who came before, and also preserves the memory of each and every pony to wield the Elements so that they will never be forgotten.
 
When Discord took over, he drove four of the current Bearers at the time to insanity, leaving only two Unicorn sisters to fight against him. After spending years planning and developing a method to defeat Discord with the Elements, the two Unicorns, Luna and Celestia, discovered a way to forcibly communicate with the minds within the Elements and convince them to activate themselves for just two Bearers instead of required six.
 
This method allowed Luna and Celestia to turn Discord into stone, but the sheer amount of power being coursed through two ponies instead of evenly spread across six permanently transformed the Unicorns into a combination of the three pony races - once an unheard of type of pony, but nowadays somewhat more common.
 
With the other four Bearers lost to Discord playing with their minds, Luna and Celestia took full control of Equestria together, and simply waited for the next generation of Bearers to appear. They spent decades ruling, waiting, and no ponies rose up to wield the Elements of Harmony, and relieve the now-referred-to Princesses of their rule.
 
By the time Twilight Sparkle and her friends came into the picture, the age-old tradition of the six ponies who wield the Elements of Harmony also becoming the leaders of Equestria is long forgotten in the annals of legend, but is still very fresh in the Princesses’ minds. Whether or not it being kept secret so that the Mane Six can enjoy a simpler life, learn to become good leaders, or just so that the Princesses don’t have to give up power, is up to the individual.

And then Celestia tells the Mane 6 that the Goddess of Harmony must be reborn and Twilight and her friends face the impending end of their own individuality/existence.
