You’re cute when you’re angry, Flutters.

Well, a little angry. Once you pull out The Stare or Flutterrage, then you get scary.

I’m fine with calling it a difference of opinion. I don’t think it’s necessarily any more stereotypical than the type of character you’re describing (which fits well with tropes like The Heart, All Loving Hero and Messianic Archetype), but that might depend where you’re looking. For me when I see Fluttershy’s outbursts in The Best Night Ever, Putting Your Hoof Down and other eps and combine it with the trauma we know she experienced in her past from The Cutie Mark Chronicles and Hurricane Fluttershy it appeals to my love of characters with psychological issues. That’s just my own personal view, but I don’t think it’s weird. And I do still see her as kind and compassionate at heart.

Chalk it up to a difference of opinion if you like, but I reiterate my position that when I think of Fluttershy as an individual with a more pure sense of empathy, compassion, and charity, I find that notion more interesting than if she were “suppressing” some stereotypical aggressive nature.

So I’m the only one here who likes the idea that Fluttershy represses her aggressive thoughts, and sometimes they slip out?

I remember. Lesson Zero was the weirdest thing to me for that very reason. I liked how in Feeling Pinkie Keen, Twilight gradually became more frustrated, but still seemed like a sane person.

As for Fluttershy, she’s my favorite pony, so you can imagine my chagrin when I see these points brought up, because they’re absolutely true. Kills me man.

I think the issues with characterization on the show can be summed up in two tropes: Flanderization and Status Quo Is God.

And like 64 said, while Fluttershy is kind of a grievous example, many other characters are no different. Remember how Twilight used to be a fairly organized and reasonably dedicated student, instead of an OCD control freak she is nowadays?

Rarity gets actual consistent characterization though, and is a strong character overall.

But yeah, I get your point. Dash and Applejack seem abused the most, though. And Pinkie isn’t treated very well either. I cite Over a Barrel: No one defended her. No one. Some friends.
