WTF?! Surprise is legit?! WTF! Like srsly I thought it was a different pony considering Pinkie Pie is literally surprise with a different colour pallet and no wings. Whatever. UInless it’s confirmed in the show, I’m not buying it.

It’d be like if Godzilla was about a bunch of Japanese celebrities turned unlikely heroes as they team up to defeat godzilla. (which by the way I would watch the shit out of if it was a thing)
 
That does sound entertaining.
 
Something to remember is that all the ponies have super powers by human standards. While earth pony plant growing isn’t much in a throw down, pegasi can all fly and manipulate the weather, and being a better flyer helps make them better at weather control. A team of pegasi stunt ponies are therefore a team of coordinated supers, even if they don’t go picking fights.
 
So even if the Wonderbolts that showed up didn’t have a plan, they weren’t exactly helpless in the situation.

this is very true. but all I was that normally when the average joe helps out with a crisis that thing they are helping with isn’t a 50 story high, firebreathing lizard rampaging through town.

They are also the ones who hold the elements of harmony. Maybe not a military but some sort of task-force to be utilized. and the mane 6 aren’t just some random group of friends the princess decided hadn’t got enough dragon in their life

You do realize that the Manes were sent after another dragon by Celestia, and only one of them might be related to the military in any fashion.
 
The Wonderbolts, on the other limb, just seemed to go after Spike on their own initiative, without any official backing or being ordered.

or they could be a “militia” of sorts where celestia just sends ponies to keep tabs on their actions to make sure they haven’t gone rogue. I kinda like the idea that they’re a group of vigilantes that was founded during a time when equestria was under attack and the military couldn’t provide enough defense for the outlying towns, especially those inhabited by pegasi seeing as only one race could go there unassisted, and the other two could quite easily be taken out with the counterspell for the cloud walking spell.

Keep in mind when spike got all greedy on his birthday in that episode (forget the name) the wonderbolts showed up to try and stop him.
 
I highly doubt they would send a bunch of regular athletes to stop a rampaging dragon. Especially since they know dragons could kill them almost instantly, fluttershy said as much in dragonshy when she described a full grown dragon as being able to “eat a pony in one bite”

Why would you think that they’re military, anyway? One third of the population can fly, so they no more need a military connection than any group of human athletes and acrobats needs one.

Do they? I’ve never had that impression. They haul around Celestia and are more mobile, but unicorns guard Celestia’s throne room and the Canterlot archives. During the fight scene in A Canterlot Wedding we see unicorn and pegasus guards in roughly even numbers.
 
During other scenes, there actually seem to be more unicorns than pegasi.

Thing one) Those are being used as camo gear, not combat gear, and is probably just a sight gag. Thing two) proving that Equestria has more modern combat gear than what the Royal Guard is (usually) shown wearing in no way links the Wonderbolts to the actual military.
 
Especially since the Wonderbolts don’t use that stuff, either.
 
Incidentally, we know that the Royal Guard changes their equipment based on the environment, at least to a small extent. We’ve seen Shining Armor switch out his purple armor and helmet for snow goggles and a scarf while he was on the job.

The Wonderbolts might have had it’s origin form a combat force, that eventually became more for stunt show purposes. The stunt shows are non-combative roles meant to give them purpose during peace time.
