While dreaming about the portrayal of this ship and more art ideas, I read a comment: “shipping is like free serotonin”. Does give me a strange, lighthearted, butterfly sensation. Weird.

Anyway, just look at the way they embrace, sing together (particularly in the cave Pipp calls “our song”), look into each others eyes, the, the… something else, but tell me that’s not canon, because I just get giggly and smile like a dumbyay. I swear, someone on the G5 canon team ships this; nothing is out of context; fight me, I will go down drowning on that! There’s enough canon content I’m pretty sure a PMV could be made.

So, is this what shipping feels like? Like having soft, fluffy, bubbling clouds in your chest even when you know it’s stupid?

Oh yeah, I fully joined the fandom around just before MLP: The Movie released, so I remember that. (I was only partially in the fandom before then, I wasn’t as invested as I am now.) And when they DID do Student Six stuff, they usually neglected a student and put Cozy Glow in their place. I think I know why that was a reoccuring theme…

But yeah, that’s that. Personally, I had decent expectations for MLP:ANG. And then the movie sunk the bar really low, and then the rest sunk that bar straight to hell.

It was just…painful. I hated seeing MLP become what G5 turned it into. God, why did such good characters have to be wasted on a generation that crashed and burned so hard?

But I think I’ll stop here before this image gets tagged with “discussion in the comments”. Thanks for letting me vent a bit, PubliqClopAccountant. (Yes, I remember what your name was before you changed it to the horse emoji.)

If the movie never happened, I would’ve said that G5 exactly matched my expectations. Instead, the movie blew those expectations out of the water, and the rest was a disappointment.

I agree about the characters. They feel more integrated as actual ponies instead of archetypes who occasionally remember they have quirky secondary traits.

Finally, Hasbro can’t even properly do extended toy commercials for little girls. Remember the lack of Student Six merchandise in the FiM days?

Exactly. And I’m not saying it was all horrible, either.

There were good ideas in the show, there were actually some moments in the movie that gave me a good laugh, and the Mane 5 characters were great.
(I say “Mane 5” because I personally don’t count Misty as part of the cast, but even she had her merits.)

Hasbro just fumbled the bag with G5 too many times. Even though I’m glad it’s gone because of how much it felt like a toy commercial instead of a show (among other reasons), I won’t deny that it had potential.

_{(Also the G5 IDW comics completely blow the show out of the water, but that’s a different can of worms. I will say this, though: the Old Man Discord arc is how you properly nostalgia-pander.)}

My takeaway from the phones in ANG is that the writers were clearly demonstrating how the technological revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the pegasus race.

Still, you’ve got much more coherent criticisms of ANG than those who were sperging out about ruining Twilight’s legacy for three years before it became clear the writers had no sensible long-term plans for the FiM connection.

Okay, Chopsticks, you’re gonna hate me for this, but I think Gen 5 was pretty crap.

It started out poorly with A New Generation, which I had to FORCE myself to watch all the way through, and after the shitshow that was that movie, I didn’t even bother with Tell Your Tale and the other G5 stuff.

I’m not saying the CHARACTERS were bad, though. Sunny was a good Twilight replacement, Pipp and Zipp gave us the “royal sisters” dynamic that Celestia and Luna gave us, and do I even need to comment on Sprout Cloverleaf and his amazing reflection of Tord from Eddsworld?

The characters were great, but they were just too radically different from what the past 4 generations gave us.

They didn’t need to shove every kind of new-age slang like the “selfie” motif that honest-to-god made me want to vomit. They tried and failed.

And honestly? As much as I love the G5 crew, I have but one thing to say for G5:

Good fyaying riddance.

It made G3 look tame by comparison. And you have to TRY to be that cringey.

G5 was just great characters in the wrong place. Honestly, I really wanted to see this go on for way longer than it did, but A New Generation already set the bar low, and then the rest of G5 sunk it down to hell.

tl;dr
The characters were awesome (minus Misty Brightdawn, we do not speak of her [and we also do not harrass her VA, guys! You know what I’m referring to here]), but the setup was crap and somehow kept getting crappier.

…sorry, had to vent for a sec there. I’m good now.

I feel like the higher-ups wanted to subvert the typical sibling drama trope by having these two grow close again throughout the story, most likely influenced by Frozen’s success. But we know how that also resulted in unexpected levels of chemistry between the characters, so 👀
