I’m fine with the Mane Five of G5. I don’t think they’re that bland as some people see them but I do think they can stand on their own. Plus, countless G4 characters have been given this criticism before they had their time to shine.
But that does not excuse Hasbro wanting to attempt to cash in on G4’s success while making sure they don’t try at the same time.

I’ve watched the G5 movie multiple times and there is just nothing to the characters. The best character is Queen Haven and she has less than 5 minutes of screen time, but in that time, she:
-Starts as a fancy royal
-when she’s in danger, drops it and her first concern is the safety of her children
-when there is promise of magic returning she fights for ponies of other tribes without any hesitation, saving one of the unicorns in the process.

She is the only one who undergoes any significant change or true development through the events of the film, no one else does, they stay as their cardboard cutout.

This is why G5 hasn’t “hooked” anyone on it’s own merit; the writing. The characters are bland and have nothing to them and the world is dull. Compare that to any one of the mane 6 from G4 in the first two episodes or the places shown in said episodes. Rarity ALONE shatters preconceptions by first appearing to be the prissy fashion gal who won’t get dirty, only for her to not only cut off her tail to help someone else, but be the first to physically attack the manticore, completely and positively subverting the expectations that she’d be a dull one note character.

Again, Queen Haven is the only one to do anything of the sort in the G5 movie and the youtube vids and the one “special” don’t change that.

with such a big separation between staffs, it spells trouble in the long-run because the Comic and Series proper will have a very fluid continuity to them making it very difficult to tell what is canon and what is not.

As Chrisman said earlier; it’s like with Star Wars: where the Fanfic Trilogy kept playing the characters close-to-the-vest and not allowing to reveal their story to other sources that could immediately serve to contradict events should last-minute decisions come up: something that inevitably happened due to The Fanfic Trilogy having two manchildren playing Tug-O-War with the script in each successive installment, first it was “Ruined” Johnson tearing apart “Jar Jar Abrahahamams” (not gonna bother with remembering how to spell his last name) Plot Points he made during Episode 7 to go in his own Non-Star Wars-y direction to tear the franchise in-half as was his intention from the very beginning: forcing Abrah to scramble to try and come up with something to try and undo the damage Johnson caused in “The Last Straw” while still figuring out how to even end this movie (a guy that has on so many occasions didn’t bother to try giving a satisfying end and just created more and more mysteries that don’t get answered at all) which brought us “The Rise of Palpatine”… And ended the entire Fanfic Trilogy on a note that should not have even been played in the first place and had served to permanently damage the Star Wars brand going forward.

The more I think about it, it’s very clear that the Mane Five are very much like Finn, Poe, Rey, and BB-8 in that they are flat as cardboard compared to the OG Cast and aren’t even given a proper chance to try and show off what their characters even are.

If Gen 5 was not connected to Gen 4 at all then we would not be talking about this.

The comic was written by Celeste Bronfman and According to Amazon they have done one other pony comic before g5 They’re not even doing the rest of the arc The others have also only done a couple of stories for the season 10 comics or the g1 crossover.
I also don’t think any of them are working on the G5 show

How do you know all the writers only work on G5? Gillian Berrow is the one writer that works on both G4 and G5 (Even providing voice to one character). Can you be absolutely sure the writers of this comic only work on G5? Please give me information on every single writer that worked on this comic, with citations and evidence.

Well, I agree as well. No show is perfect and, like I’ve said thousands of times before here, Equestria isn’t, never was and never will be an utopia. So… Yeah, flaws happen.

it is gen 5 fault, the writers when back to make the the mane 6 fail in the end.
Same with Star Wars and Star Trek

So it’s not really G5’s fault it turned out the way it is right now, at least not only the fault of this one generation, but a collective of both. The reality is, G4 is probably the most popular generation of the entire My Little Pony franchise and popularity makes money, so Hasbro will try to connect the two generations together no matter how nonsensical it might be. It shouldn’t mean all resentments should be put toward G5, especially the unique newcomers that make this new gen so colorful.

At least jus be honest and say “G5 sucks” and move on, instead of claiming one generation ruined the other when let’s be honest, G4 was ruined already in some ways.

No show is going to be perfect, there are far too many plot holes and unexplained factors within G4 that have no answers presented in any meaningful way. Same goes for shows that are “Market-Focused” like G5 is which is designed to be in the same universe as G4 and as such inherited all of the baggage that came from G4: including those unanswered questions.

(Raise hand) I am the fourth in this round of like-minded ones.

Besides, patience is a virtue. Only rarely has the narrative of a story shown itself right at the beginning of one. That wouldn’t even make sense with a slowly building arc of tension. At least, that’s my opinion. But I have also never understood this “ability” of other people to instinctively reject things immediately and without mercy, even hate them. But as Frederick the Great said? …denn hier muss ein jeder nach seiner Fasson selig werden - Every man must go to heaven in his own way. ;-)

This. Can we just leave it at that? We never said there weren’t problems, only that we’re being whiny about something that requires a time machine. Because we can’t change what’s being done.

Wait so are we also criticizing G4’s own flaws that also exist for 10 years or are we purely going after G5 because we don’t like it? Both have a lot of their own problems.

It’s funny because G5 has been stated multiple times to be a continuation of G4 in the same way as how Legend of Korra continues Avatar The Last Airbender. Of course G5 would inevitably inherit the same levels of criticism first levied against G4.

There was no way in hell to make the princess Twilight concept work without pissing off someone at every turn due to the inherent flaws it carried and it’s alarming to still see those in charge constantly proving it even a decade later.

Nice job validating 10 years of criticism, IDW. It’s never too late to admit mistakes were made.

Honestly, the saddest part of this is all the people thinking that this is somehow “good”. That the destruction and scorching of G4’s ten years of storytelling is “good” to set up G5, which has done nothing to earn any good will and only has attention, not because of good writing or enthralling characters, but because it’s trying, in vain, to explain how it has any right to exist in G4’s universe.

I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time Twilight grabbed the Idiot Ball. We all knew she’d potentially relapse into making big questionable decisions. The only difference is her friends are just glorified accessories as the “Council”, who likely don’t have any actual power to overrule a decision like this. Though to be fair, season nine did do a lot of flip-flopping between “Twilight ruling Equestria” and “Twilight and her friends ruling Equestria”.

So, was this going to be their fate if the villain trio had succeeded? I refuse to believe that the student six could bring every pony together again, but the mane six could not, I also can’t see Twilight coming to this conclusion, her entire life ponies lived together in harmony, and suddenly because one pony decides their going to spread a superiority complex around, she decides to just ignore any other possible resolution and takes a sudden extreme, separating ponies from their magic so that it will fix the problem? Yeah, that would never be a decision Twilight would come to, it’s kind of stupid and they’ve dealt with situations like these before.

I don’t buy it for a second.

(grin) So true. So damn true. That’s just the way it is. We all have our opinions. But you have to be able to respect that. Fandom is sometimes tough love. ;-)
