Pinkie has been consistently unstable throughout the run of the show, I left plenty examples in this now month-old conversation people keep reviving. A temporary lapse in judgement based on strong emotions doesn’t mean her actions were out of character. Not to mention that 1, she never left because she wanted to play the yovidaphone, she wanted to “hear it from the masters”, and 2, when your self-proclaimed life purpose is making other people happy, your best friends in the world acting really shitty to you all of a sudden is bound to be demoralizing to anyone but diagnosable psychopaths.
And don’t start with that “Their response to Pinkie’s was warranted” shit, I’ve heard it from enough people in this comment section already. She clearly wasn’t aware how much it was inconveniencing them (not like that’s out of character or anything) and they didn’t bring it up at all until the problem was already at its worst.

Recall how in ‘Pinkie Pride’ (an episode I used to dislike because I thought the celebrity cameo was dumb), Pinkie strongly considers leaving Ponyville because she thinks she’s been rejected but ultimately decides to stay because she realized that she performed an important service for her community? Remember how in ‘The Cutie Mark Chronicles,’ Pinkie states that her ultimate goal in life was to spread joy to people? If Pinkie’s self-described life purpose is to make others happy, then does abandoning her friends and responsibilities in Ponyville at the drop of a hat and moving to Yakyakistan just so she can keep playing the Yovidaphone really seem in-character for Pinkie after 8 seasons of friendship lessons?
i’m not disagreeing with you in particular from now on.
Read my reply to Minus below this. I’m not gonna argue with someone if it’s just rehashing the same points.

pinkie’s role in the episode would’ve been more understandable if it wasn’t so out of character. just comes off as petty.
The yovidaphone was clearly a different instrument from what Pinkie was used to, and perhaps her eagerness to share that gift with her friends wasn’t fully understood by them. They could’ve done a better job communicating their misgivings to Pinkie, who might not have fully understood what they were trying to say to her. Mistakes were made on both sides, but that doesn’t necessarily make this interpretation accurate. Was Pinkie Pie out to annoy her friends with her yovidaphone playing? Were her friends out to destroy her dream?
Yeah, I said that. I’m not saying Pinkie is totally exempt of any fault, but far too many people think that the others’ actions were somehow totally okay and justified. Don’t you have anything better to do than restart 11 day old arguments?
that’s not excusing anything. that just means pinkie and the rest of the mane six are both in the wrong.

I agree, thanks. It’s just so upsetting that so many people think Pinkie is the sole reason that the situation got so uncomfortable.
I agree that the other element bearers could’ve handled the situation better. But, if the objective of the episode was to show how not to handle such a situation, and a possible result of such handling, then I think it was presented effectively. In reality, we don’t always handle every situation in the best way. And, while it would’ve been nice to see the element bearers handle the yovidaphone incident better than they did, it’s also nice to see that the element bearers aren’t perfect.

Bro did you read any of the comments below before you typed this up? Every character in the episode fyayed up to some degree. Pinkie failed to take her friends’ comfort into account and they failed to discuss it in a reasonable manner/take her feelings into consideration. If you know Pinkie Pie as a character you know her biggest character flaw is her anxiety about the way her friends feel about her. See Party Of One, the “don’t forget to call!” and compulsive mailbox checking in Wonderbolts Academy. The whole pie episode from one of the later seasons. Her concern that everyone else is moving onto bigger and better things without her. She’s not “irritating and selfish” like I explained to several people below. How would you feel if your friends basically said “fyay you, stop trying” instead of talking it out like adults. I’m not saying Pinkie shouldn’t be held responsible for her actions, but they could’ve said it a million better ways, not to mention just bringing it up earlier on a person to person scale before it started to escalate.

So long as you’re a Pinkie fan, and really who isn’t? You know she’s not supposed to be irritating and selfish. She’s very considerate. This episode should not have happened. Worse though, is the idea that “being annoyed” is shown off as some bad friend quality. It’s not.
Having the ability to feel comfortable to be honest and tell a friend they are being annoying is something to strive for. The end result of this episode was a bad moral. Bad moral, bad characterisation, bad episode. This is worse than the Spike episodes because we’re used to Spike being misused. He has a LOT of bad episodes. Pinkie though, this is so rare. Closest one is Pinkie Keen where it was a good episode, with an accidentally bad moral. That’s the second worst Pinkie episode, and it’s still good. So to manage to make a Pinkie focused episode this bad is honestly impressive. The other times she’s bad, it’s never actually a Pinkie episode. It’s a writer doing someone elses episode, and not knowing how to handle Pinkie.
Given how much I wanted another Pinkamena episode, this hurt extra hard. I really wonder what the heck happened when this episode script was given approval. Given how fandom-wide we know this was bad, how did actual writers not notice this in time?
This is purely opinion at this point, but I feel like the ideal way this episode could’ve gone down was if Twi and the others were along the line of “Hey, we like that you’re trying to learn something new, but could you please try to be more considerate of where and when you play?”
From there they could’ve made the episode about Pinkie learning to play as background for the Pony Tones or something, idk.
I have to wonder if people who complain about an episode being “unrealistic” are actually seeing it as too realistic.
While she did kind of act like the instrument was her whole life, it’s far from out of character for Pinkie Pie. Not only does she have an existing fear of her friends not liking her (as brought up in Party Of One & Wondetbolts Academy*), in regards to your point about triggering FS’s stage fright, she knows she can be over the top, but that’s just her way of showing affection. See the Flawless song or even just how Discord (a very similar character) acts.
Sorry for the long yay sentence, just needed to get my point out there. I feel like people far too rarely give episodes like Yakity-Sax or What About Discord? a fair analysis just because they’re uncomfortable on the first watch-through.
*and the pie episode that I forgot that name of lmao

She had stage fright in season 2
She acted like that instrument was her whole life as though she didn’t have a musical number that explains SMILES are what makes her happy.
Just another case of forced character traits for plot development, only to be dismissed afterwards. Just like when she triggered Flutters’ stage fright, totally out of character.
/end rant.
Just been off the site for a while because of life stuff and losing interest in MLP. The announcement that the G5 movie will be in the G4 universe made me interested again, though.
