The Simpsons did until somewhere around the Skinner-is-secretly-a-spy or whatever that episode was aired. (It’s been a long time, givee a break on my memory.) Somewhere around then in season 6 or 7 I think, the Simpsons began to change. As more and more time went on, it very slowly got worse and worse, and now it’s not any better of a show than any other stuff they shovel on TV. But it used to be one of the best TV shows ever created. And yeah, it also had a really cool continuity to it, even though it wasn’t in your face with self-referrential stuff all the time, there were occasional bits that flew into each other nicely.

Not overthinking doesn’t mean not thinking at all, that’s a bold assumption for you to make.  
The real reason it got overwritten is because show staff post S7 didn’t care for the comics and had no issue contradicting them.

I also loved it! …but the fact it was a Spike episode instead of focusing on the games pissed off a lot of people and pseudo-reviewers. But like one actual reviewer pointed out, what kind of story could they have if they focused only in the games? A reharsh of Rainbow Falls and Sonic Rainboom? Or a Tv-narration like episode detailing all the events?  
…I think I railed off there.  
In any case, what I tried to say is that this series knows that, although it’s a cartoon about colourful ponies, thy have to know that there is a continuity. Sadly Andy Price’s comic seem to run by his headcanon, and even he doesn’t care for continuity errors or simply don’t caring about stablished events (Like Luna yelling at her because she spent more time with Alter Luna after her banishment, and questioned why she didn’t bring her back from the moon. Seems he forgot Celestia did so REGRETTABLY… And only because she became Nightmare Moon.)

Ok, that’s a reasonable and actually in continuity excuse.  
Still… I like it more when there is continuity (even in the worst of cases, like the “One Pony per Event thing in the Equestria Games that basically screwed any chance of having the Mane 6 in all events), than having retcon after retcon after retcon. I mean, how many times they have retconned Marge and Homer’s first encounter? Or the Krabby Patty formula made by Krabs, then it’s an old family recipe?
