The Simpsons did until somewhere around the Skinner-is-secretly-a-spy or whatever that episode was aired. (It's been a long time, givee a break on my memory.) Somewhere around then in season 6 or 7 I think, the Simpsons began to change. As more and more time went on, it very slowly got worse and worse, and now it's not any better of a show than any other stuff they shovel on TV. But it used to be one of the best TV shows ever created. And yeah, it also had a really cool continuity to it, even though it wasn't in your face with self-referrential stuff all the time, there were occasional bits that flew into each other nicely.
