I play guitar and cello as well. Pic is indeed one of the first things I did when I got my first cello, and I never cared if someone saw me playing like that either. It’s not even one of the most unproper things I did with a cello either.

Vinyl: I don’t think that’s how you play a cello.  
Octavia: It’s how I play a cello.

Yeah, when you have a couple different ways of looking at a piece of music, it really opens it up. Like, I didn’t really “get” the treble clef until I spent some time on the bass clef.

Nice. I play piano and drums, and that’s about it. But it helps a lot with being able to transcribe music and arrange things.

Yes. I consult for musicians and music stores, so I’ve got a couple rooms full of musical instruments and equipment. Some I’m playing and some in storage. Let’s just say if you live long enough, you pick up all kinds of hobbies, and end up with lots of things.
 
But I’m one of the least musical people in my family.
 
I’m not saying that playing the cello this way is practical or efficacious. But if you’re doing a piece pizzicato, and you’re in a filk group at a convention, it can be done and you get quite a reaction from the crowd.
 
The fretting breaks your brain, but it’s not like there’s a law against it.

I’ve always felt the last major scene Octavia was in (the one where she, Vinyl and a stack of other ponies ride some sort of Wub vehicle to the wedding in the 100th episode) was more of a “jumped the shark” moment. Or at least, certainly ridiculous
