It’s still somewhat popular. I don’t get the hate either, especially when some claim it’s too vulgar/violent. Compared to some fanworks and some animated sitcoms, (if you like “Rick & Morty,” it’s not a big deal) it wasn’t that bad.  
It has a very dark sense of humor, and some cringey moments true, but regardless it had a fun silly playfulness about it, and you can tell Max made the Pony.MOV parody series out of love for the series. I also enjoy the bizarre animation & art style reminiscent of “Ren & Stimpy,” and some other crazy cartoon shows mixed in. Max is actually quite talented.
 
One of my favorite moments was Spike berating Twilight for using the term “everypony.”

I remember it when first russian translations of .mov started popping up. And it was quite popular here.

@Oliver_Hancock I joined the fandom after the end of Season 4, so if you’re talking about the years before that then sorry, I wouldn’t know… But if you’re talking about after, then I guess so. In my opinion, I didn’t like the .Mov series, but I can accept it. And yeah, that is kind of true. Back when I first joined the fandom it was like “write a crap fanfic and nobody cares” but now it’s more “write a crap fanfic and everyone starts beating you up over it.” The fandom’s definitely changed.

Was the .Mov series actually unpopular among bronies in the fandom? It seemed like back in the day everybody liked everybody else and while I liked some really serious stuff, we were all mostly one big happy, mostly self aware bunch of trolls, LGBTs, 4channers, youtube poopers, outcasts and the like. Did you get that impression too or no? I thought most people in this fandom had a hearty sense of humor, but lately it seems like trollfics, parodies, etc. are frowned upon.

Was never able to understand pony.mov as a whole. As a parody, it was vicious and the characters were nothing like they should be. At least MAS was humorously deconstructive. Pony.mov was just ridiculous. But then I suppose that might have been the point.
