@TheWhatNow: I would say that it’s not so much Nightmare Moon lovers as it is that there’s people who like to think about Nightmare Moon as an extension of Luna’s personality. Even though official works have at the very least cast doubt to that idea.
 
 
Personally, though, being a Nightmare Moon fan was what drew me to reading the story where Nyx was first presented as an incarnation of Nightmare Moon separate from Luna. And I for one do consider her as such, as well as an incarnation of Nightmare Rarity, since reading said story.

I’ll just put this out there. From hating princess Twilight, to hating Flurry Heart, and to hating Starlight Glimmer, I honestly think these outbreaks are only happening because they are either trolling…. or they just hate change. :/
 
And also for the fact Nyx is probably being hated only for the fact they didn’t like the way she was being used. As instead of being the most feared villian but in filly-form, they changed her personality. They probably just hate her because they didn’t turn her into Nightmare Moon just to worship her or something… Nightmare Moon lovers is another reason.

Sense many fandoms have now reduced the term “Mary-Su” down to pretty much meaning “any character they hate,” the term has lost all it’s meaning on me, and some even confusingly throw the term at beloved/decent characters too. (Like Twilight, Sunset, Starlight, and Luna)

@AlexAngel: She’s hated for very flimsy reasons to say the least.
 
Some of the hate is fandom backlash, as there is a part of the fandom that absolutely adore her. And once this love got attention from certain people, said certain people started to dislike her.
 
Another reason is that those who voice dislike seem to find the design ugly. Despite the fact that Nightmare Rarity exists, and has a nearly identical color scheme and is praised for her design. Making this reason a very flimsy one. I would even find said hatred for this reason hypocritical should anyone say that they find Nyx’s design “ugly” but have no issue with Nightmare Rarity’s. With that said, I do have my own issues with Nyx’s design. But it’s not about her core appearance. Rather, it’s the design that another appearance she has, specifically her Nightmare form, is most depicted in. Which, I feel, isn’t a design that makes sense for her given what she’s supposed to be. That’s pretty much the only thing that I don’t like about her, personally.
 
And there’s also the classic “Mary Sue” accusation. Often from people that haven’t read the story she’s from, or those that read only the earliest versions of said story, or those that simply don’t understand her character. I don’t recall how many times I saw that argument. But the justification that came from the people making such an accusation never really have any valid reasoning for why they made the accusation in the first place. In some cases, I for one end up baffled to how that accusation can still be made when it ends up getting debunked time and again.
 
Just felt like throwing the most common reasons behind the hatred out there.
