They might communicate but if they don’t have a note about it in say a series bible or somthing that they have to follow, then one preson can tell the other somthing but it’s only there word at the time and not somthing that is a set fact.  
It’s why everyone asking like this is an asspull based only on the things not in universe are kind of missing how it might not be.  
If they are alive and the reason they where not around makes no sense and/or is not handled well then it is an asspull.  
If they are alive and they can work in a logical and understandable reason, and pull it off right, then it’s just people being butthurt for “mah headcanon” and yelling asspull.
 
As it stand, we don’t know anything, so if they are alive, lets see if it really is an asspull.

Well that anwsers that. But what about the rest of the inconsistencies? I’d really like to believe the episode is a flashback, but considering the writing of the show as of late I don’t think that’s the case.

And also, to have a in universe reason would help as this isn’t somthing done by one preson, the problem with having staff that can change out is that it’s not having one person that has the say so of what is and isn’t true for the whole time.  
So what might be true to one writer outside of the show’s events might not be for another.  
Why do you think there has been debate over the canon of EQG and the comic?  
Because there is nothing in the show to say for sure most time and there isn’t one person overseeing everything.  
It’s not being “Watsonian” to see the flaw of how not having one central authority means anything can happen, so it see it need to happen in universe to better set it in as fact is the way to fix it.

Could you stop being so fucking Watsonian? Doylist Asspulls are a thing. Just because there is no in-universe contradiction doesn’t make it any less of an Asspull. It makes no sense for the writers, in the real world, to overturn a frankly genius case of “Show, don’t tell” in an episodic series. The only reason for it would be to pump out a few more toys.

it pulled two gratuitous mary sues out of nowhere, made all the characters idiots in order to soapbox about weddings, nerfed celestia, ignored luna, was a blatant ripoff of the british royal wedding at the time, had an absolutely terrible song at the end, made vinyl scratch’s eyes pink just to piss people off, reduced twilight’s ascension to nothing more than an employee of the month award, and created changelings
 

 
some of us may be of the opinion that it was maybe just a teeny bit subpar in survivability. we lost many bronies that day, and lauren faust.
 
unless aj’s parents are alicorn royalty, I don’t think this could even come close to ACW levels of bad.
