Inkwell was awoken by a loud thud coming from downstairs. It was the familiar sound of the castle doors being slammed shut.
It was most likely his dad coming home late again.
Inkwell hadn’t seen his dad in a few days now because of how early he got up and how late he stayed out, doing his best keeping Ponyville safe. Normally after hearing the door Inkwell would just go back to sleep, however this had been the longest time his father had been gone and he really wanted to see him, even if it would get him yelled at for being up so late.
He grabbed Sir Patchedalot, his stuffed bear, and ventured out in the corridoor and down the spiral staircase. Halfway down he could hear voices coming from the throne room. He couldn’t quite make out what they were saying but they had to be loud in order for him to be able to hear them from where he stood. Hesitating now the little colt timidly continued down the stairs. He could hear the voices better from here, they sounded angry. He still couldn’t really make out the words spoken and so he decided to brave on and place himself outside the throne room door.
It was his mother and father yelling at eachother.
“I can’t believe you Flash! You promised you would be home today and still I found you gone when I woke up!”
“Well excuse me that I can’t decide for ponies not to go missing on my day off!”
“Why did you have to go though? There are plenty of guards, would it be the end of Equestria for one of them not to show up at work on his day off?! Of course it also had to be on the day that the map decided to send me out on a mission. So guess who had to find an emergency baby sitter willing to work with no times notice! Oh and guess what Flash, there aren’t many of those around!”
“Well why did you have to run on a bucking map errand then? Someone else of your friends could have gone, you’ve solved it before! Or is it just that you think my job is less important than yours?”
Inkwell accidentaly nudged the door open slightly but being too scared to move any further he just sat petrified in the small gap.
His parents didn’t notice and kept on shouting.
“That’s not what I said. You haven’t been home for three days, three days Flash! Just give the hero crap a rest for awhile!”
“Oh yeah so me trying my damndest to make everypony feel safe is crap now? That’s rich coming from a freaking princess and an element of harmony! Admit it, you just want me to be your stay at home husband taking care of the castle all day so you can be out with your friends!”
“Sweet Celestia were are you getting all these outlandish ideas from?! I don’t want to take away your job, I just want you to be home more, think of your son!”
“Yeah well as of right now I can’t be home more. We need to find those missing ponies. Don’t you think I want to see my son more? But guess what princess, I can’t!”
Twilight sniffs the air “Have you been drinking?”
“Oh and now we are on this again! Yes, I took a pint with the guys after our shift, so what?! You’ve done way worse!”
“Why didn’t you just come home?! I was completely finished after playing with Inky so that he would finally agree to go to sleep without his dad and I have to wake early to meet my brother at the train station”
“Well I…” Flash’s ear twitched as he heard a sudden sound coming from the doorway.
Twilight noticed his sudden change in expression and threw a glance over at the door. There, huddled up with eyes big as plates sat Inky.
“Baby, what are you doing up?” Her voice had instanlty switched and was now calm and soothing. Her feathers that had previously been poofed up in anger laid back down as she scooped him up. Not saying a single word to her husband, she simply just left to put the colt back to bed.
