At one time I had a cat that would do this then I you petted her side she would flop that direction an flop again if you then went for her back. She just loved to wrestle hands but slowly learned to restrain herself which provided an interesting site as she curled around your hand and fight very hard to be very gentle in her biting and such.
For a cat, being on their back is actually a defensive position.
Its the cat’s way of saying “I am performing a trust exercise. I am exposing myself in a vulnerable position. What will you do? TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, OKAY, RAR.”
When my cat tries to do this, he’s trying to lure me so he can scratch me.
