I see G4, the generation that is wanting to go back to its roots. I mean, that G4 is wanting to be G1. Not in a wannabe manner, but as in it doesn’t wish to be girly and wants to throw out the girly girl stereotypes that G3 brought. I mean, Even Lauren stated that is what she wanted.  
Granted, to me, this isn’t dark, but that can be due to many factors. However, I do see why others would see this as such.  
“Oh, look a cute cartoon with little adorable ponies. Nothing dark or bad can ever happen in a magical land of friendship.”  
Then King Sombra, Tirek, War, This scene, and a couple others laugh and say “guess again.”
 
I like this a lot, because, just like G1, G4 isn’t afraid to be dark or edgy at times.

I respect this show for taking it into some darker places in the psyche and showing us bad outcomes. That’s how some of real life is, and I think the showrunners don’t want to necessarily shy away from that just to earn a TV-Y rating. That’s one of the main reasons G4 gets so much more respect than G3.

Nah. I say that whatever god of evil that predates everything won. God of good is probably really mad about this.

I suspect this wasn’t the result of anything as elaborate as a mighty, world-destroying villain, or a complete collapse of Equestria’s government. Rather, I theorize that this timeline’s gray, dead environment has a simple explanation: That dragon never moved elsewhere to take his nap.
