Funny thing is, in Japan “Super Mario World” had the subtlte “Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4” in Japan on the title screen & box. So SMW is SMB4 officially.
The very earliest that “pandering” arguments would be valid, are S3. Because by the time S3 was being written, S1 had already finished airing, and the staff seemed to be at least partially aware of the fandom.
But the pandering didn’t SHIFT INTO MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE until S4.

Yeah it just bugs the hell out of me. Referring to FIM Season 5 with “MLP5” is like referring to the original Yoshi’s Island as “Super Mario 5”.
