I think you’ll fall in love with Parting Words, Ralph “Reality Check” Hayes Jr. has a way with the written word that can tear through the logical fallacies that are rampant in the show, while at the same time not outright destroying the setting through the application of Common Sense.
Edited because: added season context
or it could be because the comic already answered that question and the show writers wanted to answer the other one.
either way, both that episode, this comic and these comments are 4 years old.
I do like season 4’s finale for similar reasons, but it’s a lot less direct… more “why am I a princess?” than “do I want to be a princess?,” though it answers both questions well enough for me.
And I do think the show has (finally) started addressing the stress thing pretty well, though that’s a little indirect as well.
Perhaps what I’m missing is the question of whether Twilight wanted to be a princess in the first place. I guess it’s too late for that now.
Season 4 finale had an equivalent of this.
This. Tirek was a weakling at the beginning, and tracking him down didn’t require the magic of Discord. Even the lowliest investigator should have had no problem at all finding him. Everything was orchestrated to get the focus swung around to Twilight in the end.
Um, this is the Remane 5 you’re talking about, right?
Celestia apparently thought that bit of common sense was a bad idea. :/
After rewatching it, looking at how Discord pretty much SHOWS them how to open the secret box yet didn’t tell Tirek about it after he supposedly ‘trusted’ him, and then Discord, not apologizing, but smiling and winking at Celesta at the end…pretty much shows that Discord was acting the entire time ever since he left the girls with the tagged journal. And it seems Celestia asked Discord to fake the whole thing and asked Twilight to not tell her friends about the magic OR Discord’s betrayal… just so Twilight could learn a life lesson and save the day.
They endangered so many lives…Celestia, Luna, Discord, Rainbow Dash and maybe a few others easily had enough power to defeat a brute force type villain like Tirek before he absorbed most of Equestria or had the strength enough to absorb them. Instead the princess sat on their hooves from the very beginning and told the other 5 NOTHING.
Lets not kid ourselves, Celestia did the EXACT same thing with Twilight with the lives of the Crystal Empire.
Request::
Celestia: “Remember, you must complete the task of retrieving the crystal heart and saving the crystal empire alone.”
Response::
ALmost anyone with a brain: “Uh, I think I’m going to focus on saving the kingdom full of innocent people anyway I can, more then completing your ‘assignment’”
Twilight: “I’m SO sorry I saved the kingdom while failing your test. (sniff)”
Just how out of touch with reality ARE the writers? This level of endangerment and manipulation isn’t moral, its asinine and insane.
At least IDW knows not to make a plot so one-sided for a single character.
It would have warned them about Discord wouldn’t it have? I mean, the only reason they got caught is because Discord tricked them. No one seemed to think telling them Discord couldn’t be trusted was a good idea?
That was a little stupid, but what would telling the other 5 really accomplish? It’d just freak them out, cause them to panic a bit, and then get captured like everypony else. The only “big gun” they had were the Elements of Harmony, and they gave those up at the beginning of the season.
Keep in mind, the only reason she got to that point was because the Princesses were dumbasses.
“Oh yeah, just resume life like normal, but don’t tell your friends about this. It’s not like there’s an evil bad guy that could use them as bargaining chips.”
Maybe, maybe not. Tirek might honor their agreement and let the Mane 6 go if Twilight gave up her (and Celestia’s, Luna’s and Cadance’s) magic, but he’s also just as likely to grind them into the dust once he has the Alicorn Magic. He already stabbed Discord in the back, what’s stopping him from doing it again?
He’s clearly not gonna make retirement. Especially if each season feels it needs to amp up the threat level of the next baddie. (Also there’s a good chance he just rolls a critical failure at taking care of something mundane like a herd of wandering manticore.)
(raises eyebrow)
There’s nothing remotely canon to suggest she’s immortal like her aunts anymore then Blueblood. If she doesn’t have godly hair, she’s likely not immortal.
@Background Pony #F5C9
Sorry, wrong word.
Well, to some extent. Its also a very student/puppet vibe, since she allowed Twilight to be completely dependent on her praise to the point of cultist mentality.
The other big head scratcher about ‘momlestia’ besides Twilight already has living parents, is what if Celestia already is a mom?
You mean her successor, right? Predecessors come before, not after.
Also, that fits right into the whole “Momlestia” vibe; parents are always pressuring their children to follow in their
footstepshoofsteps.Many already assume that right now Twilight is likely still mortal, just like Cadense. No celestial hair, no godlike power as far as I can tell. I don’t know why nieces become mortal alicorns and nephews become only become unicorns, but as far as we’ve heard from actual official sources, (not marketing books where Trixie and Gilda are no personality antagonists), that’s how it is in a nutshell. (shrug) Equestira is highly matriarchal with a huge female population, we’ve known that since mid-season 1.
But Twilight’s current existence isn’t the issue. The whole reason for the Princess Twilight arc, the reason why Twi is a princess, is because Celestia wants her to eventually be her succsessor. That responsibility unfortunately DOES(likely) come with immortality, its a godly responsibility after all. Cadense and Twilight don’t have any godly responsibilities.
So the Princess Twilight arc probobly WILL end when Twilight turns it down or is forced to turn it down. As it says here, in a comic approved by the writing team, she doesn’t need that kind of pressure. And the longer they keep her an alicorn, the longer they have to make episodes where people don’t even notice the 4th alicorn princess in Equestria.
Now on the second issue…
That part actually kind of confused me, what Discord mentioned about Cadense and Twilight. Not only does the Element of Magic being stolen sort of count as big trouble, there wasn’t much of a big issue with Twilight’s visit with Cadense on the Games Ponies Play episode when compared with ‘lives at stake’ situations.
Either way I don’t count EG’s as canon unless they fill in some of the major plot holes.
Enhhhhhh….
Being immortal doesn’t mean that she can’t form attachments. Sure, she’d outlive Shining, but unless they made a suicide pact, one of them would outlive the other even if both were mortal.
Might be tragic, but they’d have to move on anyway.
If Cadance is confirmed to be immortal, she better divorce Shining Armor. It’s a stupid idea for an immortal to marry a mortal, if he’ll grow old and die while she remains the same age.
The Princess Twilight arc isn’t going to last forever afterall, otherwise she really would outlive her friends.
Have winged unicorns like Cadance and Twilight been confirmed for immortality? After all, we know that they lack some of Celestia and Luna’s other attributes, so there’s no proof that they share their longevity.
@Niggoslav_Krawczyk
Huhn…
I just remembered that the high school arc of the comic isn’t in continuity with the cartoon. The Discord episode reveals that Twilight and Cadance hadn’t had a meeting without some big trouble lurking around, so that peaceful get together from the comic couldn’t have happened.
At least one arc couldn’t have happened in the cartoon.
