In a significant sense, none of us are perfectly objective. We can try to be so, but in matters of art, it becomes an almost impossible task. That’s why you see a lot of people attempting to make value-based judgments, like “Flash is a bland character.” Being bland or boring is as impossible a concept to agree on as the distinction between a pile and a heap. Objective arguments would be something like, “The animation had a lot of errors,” or “Sunset Shimmer was an evil person.” We can define those aspects very tidily, but we can’t say that the movie was good or bad based on those completely objective observations, because they vary in importance to different people.

Yeah, but that reasoning tends to rely entirely on matters of personal opinion. Perceived “plot holes”, for example. Logical problems srping up frequently in the show, but the backlash against it is disproportionately worse for Equestria Girls. So, individual taste must, in my estimation, be primarily to blame.

No it isn’t. The execution was fine. All I ever hear people saying whining about is that it’s set in a high school, features humans, Twilight has a crush, blah blah on it goes. Many people even make factually incorrect statements about the film, and I don’t know if that’s because of a negative perception filter, poor memory, or the fact that they’re just lying about having seen it. Propbably a little of all the above.

I liked EG and like where Star is going so far.
I prefer Star’s graphics more but EG is canon and fits the universe of mlp better. that does not mean ithink EG was bad unlike a few fans
