No, we are just wondering if a civilian can do it, why can’t the Royal Guards who are supposed to be trained and prepared to do it: not even bothering to do it in the first place? Or for that matter, why not have the Civvies with their impressive battle record not bother to try joining up and become part of the Royal Guards with their competency?

They almost never had to hold their own! That happened, what, three times? Maybe? And aside from that, they were the only ones who possessed the ability to harness literally the ONLY superweapon Equestria had.  
You saying that a civilian can NEVER step up to save the day, that that’s not how literally almost every hero story plays out?  
And for the record, when all else fails, civilians really ARE the last line of defense.

I think you’re missing his bigger point. The narrative of the show, which puts Twilight Sparkle and any manner of friendly company in a position to be heroes, can sometimes run counter to the logic of their world, and situations where you could ask why they had to.
 
The Elements of Harmony are strong, but they’re really supposed to be a last resort. It’s great that their six wielders can all hold their own, but four of them are still technically civilians. And all too often, the reason they have to hold their own is because nearby Royal Guards, supposedly trained for stuff like this, are comically inept. Not holding the line or occupied by advancing forces - just flatly unable to do what the narrative demands of our multicolored heroes.

They don’t. The guard and police forces DO exist. Saying it solely is on Twiligt’s shoulders is just ignorant.  
Also, they are not alone, they rely on the help of others all the time. It’s literally the main staple of the plot. Did you even watch the show?

Still, the fact that the nations’ defense relies solely on the shoulders of Twilight Sparkle and her friends sets a very emotionally serious precedent and can lead to emotional trauma later on in life due to the cumulative fights that they will endlessly take part in without the assistance of competent royal guards, they have already fought in the equivalent of TWO WARS: once with Chrysalis’ invasion, and the second time with The Storm King. If they keep going at it like they are; whose to say that there won’t be something even worse on the horizon?

We don’t actually get to see what the royal guards do most of the time, so you can’t really judge them fairly.
 
Also, if the guards were always successful in finding off threats, the show would be significantly less interesting.

The Mane 6 failed only “once” or “twice” while the royal guards(and Royal Sisters) lost so many times alot.

I bet Luna is screaming internally since she wanted to go out and fight(as shown in Crystal Empire) but is blocked the chance too by Celestia .for the sake of “teaching” Twilight.

The Guards decided to take a vacation… During a large-scale public event inside of the nations’ capital, where the ruling princesses and the reagent of the allied Crystal Empire were in-attendance, just a scant eight years after having already endured an invasion and later a kidnapping plot orchestrated by Queen Chrysalis, and an assault by Lord Tirek in the interim years.
 
You mean to tell me, that in that particular moment, when anything could go wrong: and that it did go wrong… Equestrias’ defenders who swore their very lives to protecting the realm from all threats to it both foreign and domestic… chose to go on a damn vacation?!
 
I honestly don’t know who to pit the blame on here: do I blame the Generals, the Guards’ commanding officers, or do I blame the Princesses for their short-sightedness and preaching of the importance of a Peace that has time and again proven that it can never truly exist at all?
 
The New Republic in Star Wars followed these same teachings that were espoused by Mon Mothma and dismantled their entire military structure in order to better reflect the ideals and philosophies of the Old Republic that she was a part of from before Palpatine came into power, however because of the fact that The New Republic only held control over a small number of star systems and thus made it weaker overall, had did nothing to try and dismantle or appropriate the star destroyers of the Imperial Remnant for themselves to prevent The First Order from gaining a tactical advantage when they fled into The Unknown Regions for thirty years, and failing to understand the simple fact that the Old Republic was able to get away without needing a dedicated Navy and Army because they had a legion of Jedi Knights backing them up as the Peacekeepers; while all that the New Republic had in its’ pockets was simply Luke Skywalker and a small number of Padawans in his teaching: The New Republic was always destined to fail in each and every respect to the other forces of the larger galaxy. And do you know what happened? THEY ULTIMATELY FELL BECAUSE OF THE FIRST ORDER BLOWING UP THE HOSNIAN SYSTEM WHERRE THEY HAD THEIR SEAT OF POWER AND WHERE MOST ALL OF THE NEW REPUBLIC ITSELF AT LARGE WAS STATIONED AT BOTH POLITICALLY AND MILITARILY WITH THEIR TOKEN DEFENSE FORCE!
 
I am reminded of a very poignant and interesting quote that readily applies towards the incompetent people that constantly try to talk hollow words regarding “Peace”.
