in operant conditioning, variable-ratio scheduling is a kind of reinforcement, where the reward is delivered after an unpredictable amount of responses. it’s more effective than ordinary positive reinforcement, producing compulsive behavior in anything that has neurons. doesn’t matter how smart or savvy you are. it’s all in how vulnerable your brain matter is to that sort of thing.
 
so, watch out whenever anyone starts talking about “arr-enn-gee” in a game. loot crates, random drops, even random worldgen (damn you, minecraft). the law thinks it only matters if it’s “real money,” but the evidence is clear that it has the same effect on our brains, with or without money exchanged.
 

it’d be nice if that was true, but I think it’s just more strings, to assume you can break free like disney’s pinnochio. be careful what you’re exposed to, and don’t let people tell you that they’re too smart to be affected by it.  

they don’t need to get you entirely, 100%, forever. they just need to get you enough that you keep buying games. with this video game handicap bolted onto your brain like harrison bergeron, they get to enjoy all the success, while you never quite manage to get ahead.

Are you referring to online gaming? Because I see no gambling or rule enforcing in offline gaming. If you can’t do something in a game it is because the game is not made for that purpose, just like a top is not meant to be kicked like a ball.  
But my online experience has been different, maybe because I avoid games with loot boxes and large PvP communities. I prefer games where there are no reasons to enforce rules and no gambling.
 
I do like some gambling, I won’t lie, but never online. I love to make bets with my sister over predicted events, and generally we make bets on who pays for the next meal, never with set amounts of cash. Gambling carelessly is not something we like.
 
I also refuse to believe most humans are like Pavlov’s dogs and entirely unable to break from any mental conditioning. Of course, infantilized people are not much different from Pavlovian puppets, but once you break the first conditioning (Be a child) you break the rest with less effort.
 
I am certain that media sends messages, often confusing or ambivalent, to brainwash people, but onece you see the strings, you can break free from the puppeteer. I am more worried about the school system than about video game sor TV to be honest. I am sure the fact that compulsory education reaches past puberty and into adulthood (With 20 year olds still going to high school sometimes) is somewhat related to infantilizing people. i have read a few studies on that.
 
I certainly hated being treated as a child when I was 14 years old, so I suspect society holds young adults back nowadays.

I think video games are operant conditioning, i.e. gambling. they’re also twisting people’s desire for everyone to play by the rules into a weapon against freedom, knowledge and privacy, because how else do you stop the evil cheaters? they’re also stunningly beautiful, gorgeous works of art, fun and clever ways of thinking, and interesting, engaging stories. so video games are sort of like a beautiful portrait of a lovely vista, with a dead rabbit stapled to it. and the rabbit’s really starting to stink. I call the rabbit “vidya.”
 
anyway you’re right that the first rule of tyranny is to infantilize your victims. make them feel like helpless children, and they’ll happily obey a father figure you impose on them. when good old “father of nations” papa stalin died, people got trampled to death by the mass of mourners trying to pay their respects. but we can’t blame them for being victims of oppression. the problem is not the ones acting like children, but the ones making them act like children, by taking away their freedom to act on their own.
 
giving freedom away for safety, you could say only a child does that, but try asking the child’s mother if she’s ever given away freedom for safety, out of fear for the safety of her child. that’s the second rule of tyranny: get all your victims to have children, because if you threaten their children, they’ll do anything you want.

I do not thing video games, or any form of art, is harmful. I firmly believe the lack of desire for privacy and freedom is born of not maturing mentally. Why? Because I was pulled out of that by a man who was out already. The reason they don’t seek freedom is because they feel safe. Only a child gives away freedom for safety.

on usenet, there was a group called alt.devilbunnies, where raving gun nuts swore up and down that the world was being conquered by a race of adorable fluffy rabbits from the bowels of hell itself. interspersed with this were messages on how wonderful bunnies are, and how nobody should be afraid of them. and of course the “encrypted” messages secretly exchanged between the bunnies on how to subjugate humanity and control their minds, while the gun nuts collectively known as “fudds” shared secrets of how to escape the mind control, and why moxie is the best soda pop ever conceived.
 
so no, I don’t believe the problem is people refusing to grow up and act like adults.
 
the problem is enforced ignorance, stuff like obfuscated javascript and closed spec phone hardware making people incapable of learning computers, then exploiting that ignorance to invade people’s lives in ways that they can no longer protect themselves from. so people stop struggling, start defending their abusers, and lashing out at innocents, because they want everything to be okay, and they don’t know how to fix things.

I get it. well. I know why the mess is going on. Stunted mental maturation. Most people (especially millennials and later generations) still want to be children. They don’t want to become adults. They are so used to school life (Which is long and without a sense of maturation until very late) they can’t even think of anything else. They want to stay as children for as long as possible.  
That is not healthy. Healthy people should want to be adults and achieve something by becoming such. But since achievement is perceived as harder nowadays in comparison to the past, they are scared of even trying.  
In the past we had 13 year olds leading armies and ruling nations, nowadays they still wet their bed at that age. In the past we had 20 year olds inventing technological breakthroughs, nowadays they still wet their bed… And call it performance art.  
People don’t grow up mentally, and the inner conflict caused by their bodies saying “You are an adult. Start acting like one.” and their minds saying “I am 25 years old. I am still a kid!” is driving them insane.

Yes. it was terrible, but as in everyone was rude terrible. Now it is not half as rude and twice as cringy as it was back then. It is no longer a place to call home. Most chans are the same too.
