Opaline wants to gain misty’s trust. Misty isn’t stupid. She wouldn’t stay with Opaline if all she had with her were bad memories. Misty sticks onto “the good times” she had with Opaline as an excuse for her being a good person.
When you’re a long-term victim of these kinds of abuses, your judgment and thinking is clouded and you can develop a type of co-dependency on them. It’s also why abusers tend to be super controlling over the victim, cutting them off from friends and family so they are reliant upon the abuser. In this way, reaching out is very difficult.
So Opaline might recognize this as a threat and react with niceness as a trump card; abusers do that too.

Now this is what I’d call a no-win situation. If she sits down, she’s leaving herself vulnerable for the abuse that is sure to follow. If she refuses, she gives Opaline an excuse to get angry. I don’t think this is so much Admiral Akhbar as it is Kobiashi Maru.
