I know I should just walk away, but I can’t let this post go unchallenged. Your post is a good progressive interpretation of history, but it is not entirely accurate and more then a bit condescending.

There is no question that slavery was an integral part of the Civil War and that many who fought for the Confederacy were attempting to preserve the institution. However, it was not the only grievance the South had (the Southern concept of Nullification had nothing to do with slavery for example). As you point out, there was no real reason for the common man to fight for the Confederacy (he had no slaves, nor any chance of getting one) yet the people of the South were often fiercely loyal to their new nation. This was more than just the elites pulling the wool over the people’s eyes, they were actively fighting for something. What that something was is open to debate and I will not discuss it here, but it was certainly not slavery.

You are right that after the war, the flag more or less faded into obscurity until racist got their hands on it and used it for their despicable purposes. However, after the heyday of Jim Crow and the racists, it took on a new meaning, that of pride in the South. For example, I don’t think anyone seriously believes that the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazard was supposed to be racist. There are other meanings as well; such as a belief in small government or, as a result of the recent controversy, of free speech and standing up to oppression. However, love of the South is what the flag usually means nowadays; this isn’t to say that racists don’t still use it, but that it is predominately used as a symbol of pride and love.

None of this is to say that people can’t view it as racist, symbols like flags have different meanings to different people and none is inherently more valid than another. In many ways though, it doesn’t really matter what the history behind a symbol is, what maters is how it is perceived now. The swastika had been around as a symbol of good luck for millennia before the Nazis co-opted it, but it is now universally viewed (at least in the West) as a symbol of hate and antisemitism. The song Yankee Doddle was sung by the British to insult and make fun of the colonists, but has turned into a patriotic American song. The fact of the matter is that the meaning behind the rebel flag has changed to those who choose to fly it; it no longer means opposition to desegregation and civil rights, but love of the South. While I personally do not fly the flag, I have no issue with those who do and support the effort to reclaim the Confederate flag and turn a former symbol of hate into one of love.

As for the rest of your history, it is a cheap shot to call the Republican party racist. The fact of the matter is that the Republican party is not particularly racist. The South did move Republican partly as a result of dissatisfaction with the Democrats on racial policy, but both parties by that time supported Civil Rights. It’s telling that the Civil Rights act passed with more Republican then Democratic support and that the Republicans did and do well in many places outside the South (and that the demographics of their support are similar in all regions of the country). The political realignment had more to do with changing demographics and a divergence between the national Democratic party and the Southern base. Until recently, the South has elected Democrats to many levels of government (including Governors, Senators, and even moderate Democratic Presidents). It is worth pointing out that these Democrats were referred to as Blue Dogs because they were much more conservative than Democrats from the liberal states. This suggests that Southerners have been/are more conservative than elsewhere in the country and that the switch to the Republican party is largely a matter of ideology, not racism.

The media and the Democrats do a good job telling people that the modern Republican party is racist, but that simply isn’t true; they are no more racist then the Democrats. While they may not support the same legislation the Democrats do, it is not because they are racist, but because they have different views on freedom, fairness and how to lift people out of poverty. Both parties have the same goals, just different ways of getting there. You can disagree with their ideas on how to achieve liberty, prosperity, and equality, but that doesn’t make then evil or racist.

Right, I’ve droned on for too long and probably angered just about everyone here, I’ll shut up now.

Shh, shh, it’s okay to be wrong. The Civil War was as much about slavery as it was anything. A faction of landowners that wanted to preserve their ways of life. Even during the time it was happening the Civil War was called the rich man’s war and the poor man’s battle. It was all about the oligarchy fighting to maintain the status quo that benefited it most easily. It only wasn’t about slavery in the grander sense of goals. But the literal goal was maintaining white supremacy and slavery as institutions (the North was not much better and was mostly anti-slavery only due to the power struggle it had with the South. Either way you couldn’t really have the Civil War without slavery because American history would have taken a completely different course without it, making it silly to quibble over whether it was about slavery or not).

Also to get back on topic with the Confederate flag, the problem with it is that it languished in the hands of the United Daughters of the Confederacy until WWII when units from the South started using it as their symbol. After WWII the next people to take it on were the Dixiecrats, the conservative and anti-Civil Rights faction of the Democrats that split off under Strom Thurmond, got crushed in the next election, and folded their way into the Republicans (leading to the Southern Strategy and the reason the Republicans are the party of Lincoln yet are now the most racist of the mainline political factions in the U.S.). Shortly after that in the 50’s, literally right around the time of Brown v. Board of Education that started the process of integrating schools, several Southern states suddenly added Confederate symbols back to their state flags and the flag was widely used by groups opposing desegregation.

And I’m not some Yankee telling you about the South, this is my heritage, my ancestors getting shot at because of a rich man’s crap. If you’re from the South as well surely you can sympathize with the fact we got the raw end of a deal perpetrated by the rich elite.

It actually means a seperation from an oppressive state and an all-powerful federal government.
The narrative of the Civil War was never about slavery until afterwards.
