I just find it ridiculous that only ONE PERSON left all those pictures, AND had varied ways of writing.
There was only one who got to develop a relationship with the cube, that was a scientist known as Rattmann, as explained in this comic, which covers events before, during, and just after Portal.
Not me, heck, I’d been in there for at least an hour, just exploring everything and trying to do anything and everything to get anywhere and everywhere I could.
It’s worth it to have GLaDOS state her amazement at the player with regards to their ability to get “trapped with no way out” before opening a hatch just to free them.
Though, most players are not Chell. While she’s been in Aperture forever, the player at that part of the game has most likely been in her bare feet for roughly less than half an hour. :T
The point is more established if you go into one of the secret rooms on the floor with the Companion Cube, where several pictures are posted of previous individuals who developed close relationships with their cubes. It was meant to establish how they viewed it as far more than just “an object”; this is a result of the effects of ‘isolation’.
