Yes, sorry, I should have been more clear.

What I meant to say:
Hg is one of the few symbols that I can’t remember what it stands for. It’s Hydrargyrum, if you’re curious.

Princess of Science
The most famous element discovery story is that of thulium; as mentioned in the (rather outdated) PTOV video Charles James reported 15000 recrystallisations before obtaining some sample deemed homogenous enough. The name comes from the mythical island of Thule - which according to a 2010 “rectified” description by Ptolemy is most likely Smøla, Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

Thulium is one of the elements (mostly the heavier ‘T’ elements) that I almost always mix up when I see the symbol. This is despite the fact that I can remember the names for almost all the symbols, even the non-english-based ones. The one I don’t know is Hydrargyrum.

Thulium-based lasers are used as medical lasers. Seems the lanthanides are good in lasers, and magnets, and not much else.

According to wikipedia, Thulium irradiated in fission reactors is used as a low-intensity X-ray source for medical scanning equipment and for detecting minor defects in inaccessible machinery.
