This is why I have tinnitus.
That sounds fun. :D
We somehow managed to load a 1¾” mortar shell in a 2” tube one year, so it went FOONT! much more… quietly than expected, and just sort of lazily hopped about twenty feet in the air and then dropped a foot or so before detonating like a WWI artillery stonk and pelting everyone with crackling incendiary submunitions.
For about 4-5 years straight we had some kind of fireworks mishap…
One year an artillery tube seperated and sent the shell into a tree, that was…exciting…
Another year a ground display firework just plain detonated, never bought that one again…
An artillery shell failed to fire one year, temporary blindness & deafness insued…
My favorite had to be the year a 1000-shot saturn rocket fell on it’s side, my cousin and I were some distance away watching on a trampoline when it happened. I only recall shielding him with my body in a tackle as little explosives flew above & below us…We both became war vets that night. >_>
Now, I still practice safety, but I’m somewhat more caviler about it.
Because, I know if I get hurt from it, it’s my own damn fault.
To be fair, this was about ten years later, when I had gotten a lot more creative with my cowardice.
So yes but actually no, lol.
But what I WOULD do with them was bundle up about ten of them and place them between a couple of rocks before setting it off.
The metal was definitely glowing after the show was done.
…but I was about ten feet away.
pretty much negligible
I COULD SUGGEST SOME EXPERIMENTS
People getting tossed by explosions or other sudden accelerations while their accessories stay in place through a combination of inertia and air resistance is A Thing That Actually Happens, though, not just a cartoon comedic effect; it resonates subconsciously because most people have seen it happen before. Hats in particular have a delightful way of refusing to cooperate when you change direction suddenly if they’re not well-fitted.
Air resistance from that height is pretty much negligible.
All the rest is for comedic effect. Specifically, the fact that the hat stays there while Applejack is bumped away.
Heavier objects usually do fall faster than similarly shaped lighter objects in an actual atmosphere; gravity is pretty weak sauce as fundamental forces go, but wind resistance is a harsh mistress when it comes to sectional density.
Dude, I’m qualified in all the useless educations that make you sound smart but hold absolutely zero sway in any practical situation. However, I was thinking more along the lines of a lighter hat would be more likely to get caught in a stray gust of wind, thus catching more air time.

I hope you’re not implying that it should fall faster because it’s heavier.
I think the way it falls in this animation is to give some more comedic effect.
Props to FtK for these little details!
Of all the conventional hats, cowboy hats are one of the heaviest.
Looks great to me when you notice its little spin, hehe.
