Canon
 
a collection or list of sacred books accepted as genuine.
Another word for official. Used quite often in fan fiction to differentiate between the official storyline in which the fan fiction is based on.
In fiction, canon is the material accepted as officially part of the story in an individual universe of that story.
Canon is all about authoritative standards—for literature, sainthood, or behavior.

@Pagan: Well, if I’m in a particular discussion, I’m often not trying to “force the other person to accept” my viewpoints. Only to explain my stance. If any form of official explanation is given, I’ll take it. It may give me some more things to think about.

My only opinion on them is that I am liking them less and less as more and more people try to use them to argue against headcanon stuff.
 
I don’t care what they did in the comics. I am only interested in the show. I don’t care if a given fan theory is ‘disproven’ by the comics.

I’m fully aware that IDW and Hasbro say they are canon but like I said that only goes so far and you can’t force people to accept everything I like most of the comics all but 3 in particular the rest I’m fine with but those other three and some general things with comics involving Chrysalis.
 
I don’t pay much attention to EQG or the chapter books so I have no opinion on them and I never read any of the comics involving Luna or NMM so I have no opinion on them either.

“We give kids and consumers the opportunity to relive the story, but what sets us apart is that we are not quite interested in telling you what happened in a particular episode, but more interested in telling you what happened between episodes,” explains Michael Kelly, director of global publishing, Hasbro. “When the TV goes off and the movie theater goes dark, those characters are alive in your imagination. We build that story out and give you stories that happen in between the episodes and movies.
 
And “canon” is often used to describe anything that’s in continuity in regards to the main story. It’s pretty much why showrunners describe EQG as “canon in that it happened”. And given what I remember the showrunners saying about the chapter books, the same applies to them. If anything, the TCG, toy backstories. and the iOS game are so far the only “non-canon” MLP:FiM materials.

One of the flashbacks recounting Chrys’s suspected fake stories involved Flutterponies. In the climax, Celestia’s plasma beams were the apparent cause of holes on all Changelings, though as aforementioned, each of her stories were suspected to be false.
Page 10: In a flashback recounting a story told by Twilight, Changelings are attacking the unicorn city of Trot, when Celestia and her Pegasus guards swoop in.
 
Page 11: Twilight narrating: “Princess Celestia arrived in time to save the citizens of the city and banish Chrysalis for hundreds of years…”. The image here is from the same panel.

Amy Keating Rogers made a book, The Journal of the Two Sisters, and in an interview, she claims the alicorn homeland brought up in the book is applicable to Celestia’s and Luna’s past in the show.
Link? And the closest thing to an alicorn homeland I can find in the book is the reference to how they “ran and flew in the hills of Canterlot”.

Thanks. I notice, though, that:  
  • that’s Andy Price saying that Hasbro says something  
  • Hasbro has a clear vested interest in supporting and promoting the MLP brand  
  • he specifically says “canon” (whatever that means), not “they share a continuity”  
  • he says “until the show says otherwise”  
  • he doesn’t mention the books at all.

This was more than likely guaged by the responses I saw on DB, however, there may be other thoughts on the Chrys Friendship I’ve not yet found… If I have, I may have forgotten; you’ll notice I’m not super attentive. lel
 
It’s rather apparent the connection between the program, comics, books, EG, and other venues is vague enough to, eh, cause the fanbase to endlessly argue for about it for six years. There are fans who instantly dimisses anypony who brings up information not expressly discussed by the show. Why? I dunno. >w<

I wouldn’t exactly know how this could be at all relevant unless another alicorn(s) immigrates to or visits Equestria from their birthplace. This’d ultimately involve giving Celestia a far larger spotlight than she has had previously, which I’d probably call something me really, really wantee.

News to me. I flipped through it just now and didn’t see it. What pages?  
The story of the creation of the Changelings the comic depicted was dismissed by a majority of the fanbase for being lame.
I’d be interested to see the polls or surveys where that was determined.  
However, I’d imagine because it was told via the comic, the program nor another outlet registered with FiM’s trademark will delve into the origins of the creation of the species.

The story of the creation of the Changelings the comic depicted was dismissed by a majority of the fanbase for being lame. However, I’d imagine because it was told via the comic, the program nor another outlet registered with FiM’s trademark will delve into the origins of the creation of the species. This is actually applicable to a few other ascepts introduced by the comics, books, and other mediums besides the show. To be honest, I don’t particularly feel the need to think about or discuss such things as Cadance’s childhood, Sombra’s source of dark powers, or the country of all alicorns, because I’m expecting, eh, I suppose more likely, hoping they’d be implemented in the show with… Eh, some alterations if necessary. ^3^

What Flutterpony arc? Whose idiot birth? And why do you feel the need to point out that you don’t remember a particular thing in a comic you just said you haven’t read yet (though I imagine you may have by now)?

What are you even trying to say here? That the chapter books are in continuity with the show, but EQG isn’t? Or the other way around?
It’s the one of those two that makes the slightest bit of sense.

@Pagan: Okay. But like I said. Very few inconsistencies between the show and comic are so crippling that there’s a blatant contradiction. People that don’t like Nightmare Moon being a separate entity from Luna and say that such a thing “goes against” what we know of Luna (too) often ignore what Lauren Faust herself has said about Luna, don’t think of any motive Luna would have for willingly using what Lauren Faust said turned her into Nightmare Moon, and don’t think about stuff like why Luna was so easily forgiven after being purified by the Elements of Harmony. Some more things even arise when taking Journal of the Two Sisters into account with all of that. Things that arguably wouldn’t make sense if Luna and Nightmare Moon were truly one and the same in more than just body and ability.
 
Speaking of Journal of the Two Sisters, there is an inconsistency in it that does arise when Celestia comments about Flurry Heart. But like I said, it’s minor.

Taking another source made by different writers who usually don’t pay attention to the original source and using that as proof of something especially when it contradicts is really not something you should do if you can’t use evidence from the actual source being discussed then you probably shouldn’t discuss it or at least not act like you have the superior answer.
