I wouldn’t say it works that way. I can switch my eye. Whichever I am not focusing with will wander.
Yeah, my dad developed his strabismus in infancy; he was first taken to an optician at about 3yo. In later childhood, they offered him the chance of surgery to repair the eye muscles and give him normal stereo vision, but the optician referred to the procedure as a “purely cosmetic” one (what, fixing double-vision is considered a cosmetic surgery? o_O), and being a young boy hearing the word “cosmetic” and thinking of girly make-up, he turned it down flat. O well. By the time he learnt of his mistake over the word in adulthood, they said it was too late to help him.
In my family, my dad has had strabismus and long sightedness (hyperopia) since infancy, my mum has had short-sightedness (myopia) since her early 30s, and my sister has developed astigmatism since her late 20s. All three now wear glasses, and I’m the only one who doesn’t (but I take regular biennial checkups just in case). The only problem I have is a case of stereoblindess, which even glasses can’t fix.
My strabismus onset when I was an adult. I learned to live with it, I think, and didn’t really realize I could do anything about it. My case was rather mild, though. Prism lenses are helping me a great deal! I had no idea how much stress it was causing me until I could actually see properly again.
About your dad: poor guy! Sounds awful! Sounds like he would have to have surgery to fix it. And it this point, I don’t blame him for not wanting to bother with it if it’s been this long. Interestingly, I found out my dad has a mild case of strabismus, too.

No, it’s permanent stuck facing inwards. He can force it to move by closing his other (good) eye, but when both eyes are open it’s always turned in.
So your dad isn’t able to switch his eye at will?
That being said, it depends on the severity of the condition. My dad’s had strabismus all his life (he’s now retired at 63), and has his right eye permanently staring at the side of his nose, he can’t control it at all even for a little while.
