Because “silent” can also mean “doesn’t talk much”. Which is appropriate descriptor.

Ponies can write with their mouths AND using their telekinesis, and with “hoof magic” going around, probably using hooves as well. Cutting out tongue is impractical to silence someone when said someone can not only write out something, but also show something, as per the magic.
That is sad man. :( but I totally understand that.
Also, it would definitely make them prophets. Possibly of Celestia; depends on whether or not she likes skee ball.

I heard she turned them down once she heard she couldn’t do fan projects if she went through with it.
To be honest, I’m happy. I don’t want the fans influencing the show too much.

I asked Nowacking at Midwest Bronyfest and she said it’s because she can’t move to Vancouver (and it’s doubtful she’d be able to still do fan videos if she becomes official. Breach of Contract and all that)
I had the idea she’s a mute and turned to music to express herself without a voice.
Like, she saw something and they cut off her tongue to make sure she doesn’t tell anypony.
