I still think if twilight went she would have spent the entire time (trying to) clean up the library, and completely failed to give a fuck about the idol.

I think she would, and that’s why the map wouldn’t let her go, because she would fuck up the real point, which wasn’t to retrieve a trinket to bring an unstable society back together, but to bring the magic of friendship there.

What if the idol and the stick from the opening are actually important and they come back later as Grandalf the Wharf?

Well, as long as I know she don’t have clairvoyance among her talents… So to retrieve the idol she had to find it first. Of course she could try to teleport in the depth of the gorge randomly… only to be smashed into the wall by the wind. She could use forcefield to protect herself from the crash, of course… but, if she wasn’t extremely lucky, she would have to do it all many times to find it. Maybe she would have managed to do it successfully anyway… or maybe she would have lost her concentration for a moment and ended up injured or worse a long way from any help… I don’t think Pinkie and RD would allow he to take such a risk all by herself…

I think even Twi wouldn’t been able to retrieve the Idol from the bottom of the gorge, out of vision and against strong wind blowing here…
