I miss the time when Sundown did cool images like this, nowadays he just does the sexualized pics (which I still like of course).

The only problem I see is that Discord’s hair should be black.
Dunno why but most of the time people forget that its only his goatee and eyebrows that are white, his mane is black.

IMO, at least all the mane six are white, with maybe Twi and Dash as exceptions. But I think people should at least take their voices into account, instead of just slapping a random race for the sole purpose of being diverse.

That being said, this image is wonderful, and I greatly approve.

Races don’t exist in Equestria like in our world. Every humanisation of them is correct. All of them may be caucasian, black, latino or asian. Theres no such thing like “they look blackish” just because their mane is black
Mechanized Pony

The way everyone is presented here really feels just right and how I’d image they’d look like if they were to be portrayed humanisticly. First, Chrysalis’ attire is fitting for a royal succubus and even seems to provide some protection for her waste while she’s in combat, as she has proven more than willing to fight should the need arise. Next, Nightmare Moon looks regal while very imposing at the same time. Just the way she is standing with that stoic expression she wears makes me think that she is confident enough to dance circles around me and cut me up into ribbons with that scabbard of hers. Then we have Discord. Someone who can blend business and absurdity while at the same time being absolutely serious about whatever nonse presents itself. He would probably dress like a man of professionalism, but his face would tell a completely different story. Last, but not least(though some would disagree), King Sombra. The tyrant of a frigid wasteland, Sombra would definitely adorn clothing made of the pelt of some unlucky creature while maintaining an appearance of royalty. It is known that he was brutal and merciless. Some may even argue that the mare’s attempt to flee from the Crystal Empire when Sombra returned implied that she would rather take her chances with the heavy blizzards than have to live under the malevolent king’s rule again. This oppressor also had the use of powerful magic that seemed downright evil in every way that it was used; even making it so that anyone who tried to remember and speak of life during his reign would receive emotional, physical, and mental pain as well as episodes fear. All of that would lead me to believe that he’d also have to be a very foreboding beast of a man.

I’m not really a fan of horned humanizations (with the exception of Discord and maybe Tirek), as the horns always seemed really out of place to me, but these designs make the concept work marvelously. The only things that I can say kind of bother me are that the handle on Nightmare Moon’s scabbard is a tad too long and that Sombra’s smoke like hair isn’t wavy enough and is instead a bit too puffy.

All in all, there isn’t a whole lot that one could gripe about this picture. It’s a downright fantastic piece and I hope to see more like it.

Your own rambling in your argument demonstrates the fact that there is no way to win, someone will always be upset or offended no matter how you draw them.

And that’s the truth of humanity. The fact that someone will always be able to find something to complain about is why the word utopia comes from both “perfect place” and “no place.”

@RektPony
It’s just freakish. These characters all have dark colors in canon.

I… guess I can see making Sombra a Viking-type, and Luna-as-human should probably look to be the same race as Celestia-as-human, so NM is ok… but Discord being any visibly distinguishable race at all always bugs me, because he’s a conglomerate of different species and his basic structure is a pony-dragon hybrid. (Also, Sheogorath much? Really? That’s just lazy.) And Chrysalis is not the same species as ponies and has a black exoskeleton and can’t reasonably be said to come from any specific area of the world, because we have no idea where changelings come from…

I mean, when people draw all of the Mane 6 as white girls, I can see it, because between hair style and base hue, all of them but Twilight can be more easily represented by white girls. (Twilight could be reasonably Asian or Indian… but Pinkie has white-type curly hair, not the super-tight curls black women have, and everyone else has hair that looks more like white girl hair than other races.) And they’re different races in canon, but when translating to humans, that could be just as easily rendered as ethnic backgrounds.

But… Sombra and Chrysalis do not look like they would be white people if they were humanized. There would be unfortunate implications if all the villains were dark-skinned and all the heroes were light-skinned, but the implications of having every single canonical dark-skinned villain be a white person are equally unfortunate.

It’s like, there’s diversity for its own sake, where you’re taking characters who are drawn with white-people traits and making them other races; and then there’s taking characters who are drawn with not-white-people traits and making them white people, and honestly, that is worse. It makes the world more boring. Either way isn’t entirely true to the canon, but one is trying to make people who are underrepresented feel better, and the other is screwing over people who are underrepresented out of thoughtlessness (or in some cases active racism, though from what people have said here I don’t think that’s it here.)

You really can’t be okay with “make everyone with dark skin white” if you’re also going to argue that ponies who look like they have white-people traits should be drawn as white people… unless you’re a racist. I mean, either you’re for diversity, or you’re for sticking close to canon… or you’re for making everyone white for no reason, which is racist.

I’m willing to buy that the artist isn’t racist and this was just… I don’t know, maybe a desire to avoid making villains dark-skinned to avoid the appearance of racism, or just not thinking about it. But to me, it looks weird, and kind of boring, which detracts from the quality of the picture.

Some diversity could be nice. But:

Chrysalis is a changeling, she could be changing her skin tone to fit in with the others.

As far as we know, Sombra is from the area of the Crystal Empire, which is in a northern, cold area, much like Europe, where most Caucasians come from.

Nightmare Moon/Luna would spend most of her time in the moonlight, rather than the sunlight (despite the fact that moonlight is reflected sunlight), so wouldn’t get any form of dark tone, much like myself which my dad actually calls a “moon tan” (though she could also have been born with a dark tone, which would completely negate my argument).

Discord doesn’t even have to justify himself to anyone. Maybe tomorrow he’ll be purple. (which is a total cop-out for my argument)
Alara Rogers

I am never going to stop being weirded out that characters depicted with literally black coats (or exoskeletons) are portrayed as white Caucasians in humanizations. NM I can get behind because she’s Luna, who’s Celestia’s sister, and Celestia is kind of the whitest pony in the universe, and among humans those traits usually run in families. But… 4 bad guys and they’re all Caucasians, including the two that are literally black in canon? When canonically only two of these guys even belong to the same species, and those two belong to different races of that species?

It’s just weird. I’d be ok with it if it was mixed up some, you know, Sombra’s white and Chryssy’s black and no one can tell what the hell Discord is, but having them all be the same race when a, they’re not even the same species, and b, it requires doing totally different colors, not even in the same general hue range, for them? That’s just bizarre.
