I got the impression that Ponyville and Cloudsdale both had that same attitude, and that’s why RD didn’t go to jail for all her destruction.
I know this.
It’s just that I’ve known of Japanese localization teams censoring Mushroom Clouds before.
Giant nuclear-style mushroom clouds are actually pretty prevalent in anime. They just tend not to be labeled as nuclear weapons except in rare cases - even if they’re as destructive as (or more than) the real thing.
Also, mushroom cloud does not necessarily imply nuclear explosion. Plenty of conventional explosives create a mushroom cloud.

It’s not so much the explosion but the heat exchange after the explosion, hot gasses rise but at a certain altitude will cool in the atmosphere and drop forced to the sides by more hot gasses raising thus creating that shape.
Fun fact: any big enough explosion will be “mushroom explosion”, not only nuclear.
While these ponies seem tougher than your average horse, you never know.
Also, it it bad that I also thought of the the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster as well?
