fluttershy was actually swallowed whole as a child by that bear’s mother, who then choked to death. the bear she’s riding ate its mother (as carnivorous animals are wont to do with a convenient food source) and in the process freed fluttershy, but the bear skull was stuck around her head. she raised the bear cub herself and now the bear will defend her with its life.
