…also, I’d expect Captain Kirk be there to say something inspirational, like “We can’t leap to conclusions here. It may be that this is a metaphor, a way of restating some part of their culture’s philosophy. But it’s also possible that it may have more meaning than that–the Galaxy is enormous, and we have explored so little of it, yet we’ve already found so many wonders and marvels we’d never have imagined.”

There were aliens in Star Trek that fed on emotions. “Friendship” could indeed be a source of energy to them, and Spock would be the first to point that out.
