She’s not a god, just a big snuggly pony.
@Background Pony #B1D1
Hey, he’ll at least show up in person. That’s more than any real-world religion gets from its god(s). :P
But yeah, I get the feeling he’s though of as a “god of evil” type by most ponies who have heard of him (given that neither the CMC nor the Mane 6 knew who he was at first, though, there’s probably plenty who haven’t), and is gonna need to do quite a bit of PR work to fix that.
Wouldn’t Discord be closer to godhood than Celestia? If so, Twilight’s viewpoint might be closer to dystheism or misotheism; she believes he exists, but wishes he didn’t
Hey, I only attacked you because you looked like you were attacking me. It’s like a friendly fire incident, only without the friendliness.
“If it bothers you that I didn’t get your joke but still attack you because of it, feel free to leave.”
I don’t have every movie ever made memorized. If that bothers you, feel free to leave.
You seriously don’t get the fucking Stargate reference? God the people here who take everything 100% literally are driving me insane.
I’ll phrase things how I want. Don’t try to change the subject. You flung out a ridiculous and unjustified accusation, then got pissy when you were called out on it.
Card? Are you fucking serious?
Quite frankly, I’d prefer them to our current universal management anyhow. And anyone upstairs who’s offended by my saying so is free to get up off their lazy ass and smite me. :P
@Background Pony #AB41
Did you seriously try to play that card?
Or maybe someone doesn’t have a sense of humor.
The phrase “false god(s)” is just a convenient shorthand for “any god(s) other than the one I happen to believe in, which is true and self-evident and not at all based on the fact that I was indoctrinated when I was too young to reason and too trusting to resist.”
Of course, if Celestia and Luna - who are not gods, are never called gods or treated like gods - trigger this reflexive reaction, someone might be a little hypersensitive on this topic.
If we take that position, why would we not also assume that the “real” gods are merely frauds we’ve yet to debunk? Why acknowledge the concept at all?
Also, it strikes me as petty and mean-spirited to decry as false gods those who never claimed divinity in the first place. Hell, they don’t even call themselves queens. What do you want them to do, stop lighting the sky?
Besides, ““Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science
They’re not gods, just charlatans.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
I thought “false gods” implied being called gods when they’re not, rather than vice-versa.
Eherm, I think the term you’re looking for is “false gods”.
It’s called hyperbole. I am in no way implying that Twilight would actually build a temple to, pray to, or sacrifice virgins to Princess Celestia. (How do we know Twilight doesn’t offer up virgin sacrifices to Celestia? Because Spike is still alive.)
Just to clarify: by deconfirmed atheistics-wise, I mean confirmed to not be an atheist.
I feel the divinity of Celestia and Luna may be debatable.
However, this is no obstacle. Twilight can also speak of an ancient and inscrutable being, one with power that by far dwarfs even that of mighty Celestia. His name is Discord, and she’s getting real sick of his shit. (Hey, believing in a god does not always mean worshipping them. Twilight knows Discord is very real and has a power she can scarcely comprehend. This does not prevent her blood pressure from rising at the mere mention of his name.)
I don’t think Celestia is really an object of worship for Twilight, she’s more of an object of great respect, and Twilight probably views Celestia as more of a mentor than anything else. Her ascension probably hasn’t changed that.
As for her being deconfirmed atheistics-wise, I’m not sure if she could be considered an atheist. She believes in and is loyal to Tia and Luna, and they’re basically gods, theyre just never referred to as gods.
I kinda just want to see how militant atheist’s on the internet would react, I’d especially love to see how the ones that like the show would feel. But that would probably never happen, I can’t imagine that any of the characters on FIM even know what a “god” is, also I’m assuming it would cause a lot of controversy so it’s probably better if they’re just referred to as princesses.
That’s unfortunate, I’ve always felt that all religious beliefs aren’t harmful to anyone deserve respect. The only kind of belief that is offensive to humanity is the kind that breeds hate and hubris.
Pride, that’s what I’ve always blamed. Back when I was a christian I blamed petty hatred towards others like that on pride. As an atheist, that belief hasn’t changed. As long as it makes them feel good, they will hate something.
Normally I’d have a problem with a term like “true skeptic”, but if it helps differentiate between actual skeptics and people who just call themselves skeptics to save face, then I can definitely support it.
That’s interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever had a lucid dream before, I can’t even imagine what astral projection is like.
Celestia is an object of worship for Twilight. Or at least she was. Not sure how ascension has effected that.
Still, does that deconfirm her atheistics-wise? I think it does, but I’m not sure I’m impartial.
