If you want to consider eggs that will hatch in to things other than chickens, then of course eggs were around a long time before chickens.
However, even if you are only to consider eggs that will hatch in to chickens, then something that was not a chicken laid an egg that hatched in to a chicken. The evolutionary line where you draw this is fairly fuzzy but certainly wherever you draw it, the argument follows.
The answer is chickens if you only consider eggs laid by chickens, but then it’s a silly tautology.
