They do serve a ceremonial purpose, and I guess they are pretty good at the low-level nuisances, like we saw in “A Bird in the Hoof”. They’re just horrible outclassed by the likes of Nightmare Moon and Discord. The downside to Bodyguarding A Badass.
 
My personal headcanon is that they are just there for show/ceremonial purposes, there is an Equestrian military to take care of the actual threats to the nation. Which is banned from entering the capital, or any other city the princesses habppens to be in. Poor Ponyville…. Yeah, I know, headcanon and all… ;)
 
But, yeah, the Equestrian military making a show is high on my wishlist too.

Well, you saw how they fared against Nightmare Moon and the Changelings. Not to mention their utter panic after Luna and Celestia vanished in the S4 premiere.

So in addition to her being color blind, which obviously affects with her sight, she is using a ballista which can never hit the same place twice.
