Except that’s not what the writers said. They explicitly signaled her out as unsympathetic. Not because she was alien, but because she was evil.
If she was alien, one could sympathize. The writers she to be saying she’s a monster in spite of her aliveness.
It’s not that Chrysalis’s actions were altruistic, nor that they are purposefully making her irredeemable. It that her morals are completely alien to ponies.
You don’t worry about if it’s ‘evil’ to eat a hamburger (not unless you’re one of those militant vegans). Chrysalis (and likely most every other changeling) view ponies as cattle. If they do realize how ponies view their actions, they probably enjoy it. That’s what makes Chrysalis more villainous than the other villains. She knows she’s evil, and she enjoys being evil.
That’s always been my theory. In fact, I really wouldn’t be surprised that Sombra Prime will be redeemed to mirror that whole “become evil to save the universe” bullshit from Reflections.
Would that imply mirror-Sombra was a reformed villain?
Which, no joke, would almost be a saving grace for me.
While I’m sure Tirek will be, after Reflections, I honestly think Sombra is going to be a “Paladin falls to the Dark Side” story.
You do have a point there. Then again, I’m sure that when we get to the Sombra/Tirek issues they’ll be a couple of straight-up bastards as well.
Villain, not Gillian. :P
I’m not really talking about her action, or how motivated by altruism she really was (probably not much). I’m talking about her actions compared to every other Gillian in the show.
She is currently the only villain in the show whose action are even remotely unselfish. Even Luna, sympathetic though she may be, was motivated primarily by selfish jealousy.
So it’s really odd that she is the one signaled out by IDW as irredeemable, and not say Crystal Pony Hitler. I’m not asking for a sexy bug woobie Queen, just pointing out a oddity.
On the other hand, look at her methods. Changelings need love, right? Love is something that can be freely given, and in Equestria seems to be in abundant supply. If she really was that altruistic, she could have just appealed to the ponies to help feed her people. But Chrysalis instead went with kidnapping, espionage, usurping power and invasion. Her goal wasn’t just to find some food, it was to steal and conquer and consume and destroy. Seems pretty irredeemable to me. Maybe not all changelings, but definitely Chrysalis at least.
Maybe thinking it would make her less cool?
Ehh not so much, she acted more like raider, I do this because I can not because there is no other options, and all that jazz with wanting it from child ;p
But yeah she have most base for something more deeper.
Chrysalis was the only villain with anything close to an unselfish motivation in the whole series.
Nightmare Moon was mad with jealousy. Discord did it for the lulz. So bra is pony Hitler. Tirek was a DBZ villain.
Yes, usually “feed my people through Imperialism” would not a sympathetic motive make. But when she stands alone as the only villain in the whole TV series whose motivations benefits someone other than herself, it just seems odd the she’s the one the writers decide to signal out as irredeemable.
And yes, I didn’t mention the EQG villains. I was talking of just the TV series.
Just 5 issues, probably one a week during April. I could see them possibly coming back to this at a later time, but they’re calling it a special event, as opposed to a continuing new series.
Ah brand new series ?
My best guess it that Chrysalis remains under a form of house arrest and Twilight and co. may be offering her parole or full release depending on what she tells them.
If it does go into her background, I’m sincerely hoping they don’t go for some sob story. My best guess is that it will go into her childhood and how she was raised and trained to be Mommy and Daddy’s little tyrant, making her a product of her environment rather than some misunderstood woobie.
Woobiness happens to every character at some point.
But surely a hug would not have killed her. Just the opposite, in fact.
This Friendship is a species miniseries displacing both main and FF comics for the month of April.
When ? Its friends forever or normal one ?
It’s like realizing that the show your sister enjoyed was the better show all along! XD
I did. G1 My Little Pony was the show I didn’t watch because Transformers was on.
Now I’ve watched My Little Pony over Transformers Prime. Such a reversal…
Nah!
I didn’t even get what you were trying to get at with the G1 reference.
I didn’t exist back then…
Oh, then I’m not ignorant. Just old.
Reminds me of…
