“I’ve been solving YOUR little problem for five years! Maybe, for just ONCE in your life, you could solve one of mine!”
“P-Problem? I’m…I’m just a problem?”
When you need someone to blame, there’s seldom a better target than yourself.
So, I have this headcanon that Rarity and Sweetie’s parents are super-neglectful and spend all their time traveling. About as soon as Rarity moved out, they dumped Sweetie on her and headed off into the world. So, naturally, they don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, particularly on each other. It does explain a lot of things, especially how Sweetie supposedly lives with them but is always seen at Rarity’s, and the relationship between the two. Rarity tends to view Sweetie as a chore/annoyance (pre-“Sisterhooves Social” anyway), while Sweetie basically worships the ground Rarity walks on… Probably because Rarity is the only member of their family who gives half a shit about her.

It was never easy… :c
0_0 Jesus! Okay! Time to call child services on this!
Given that Pearl and Magnum’s first show appearance does not paint an optimistic picture about their parenting abilities, it’s hard not to lean towards thinking of not so rosy scenarios like this pic.
This actually reminds me of a fic I read a little time ago on Fimfiction about Rarity being at wits end with Sweetie Belle after a CMC cutiemark idea gone very wrong and her being taken aback with her parents not really giving two hoots in hell that their youngest daughter came close to dying in a fire.
@DrCoolcabbage
well technically we see raridad in front of their house in that babs seed episode, fishing
Someone who acknowledges your existence tends to make for a better caretaker. I think it might be time for a little dispute over legal guardianship.
Yeah, probably. I’m sure in canon they’re the most wonderful, attentive, and loving parents you could hope for, and they treat BOTH their daughters like absolute princesses. I’m sure the fact that we only saw them once and only see Sweetie with Rarity is just a coincidence… But that’s much less interesting.
The way her parents might be, maybe she’s better off living with her sister. At least she seems to pay attention to her, care for her.
Of course, since we really don’t see how much she interacts with mum and dad, I can’t make a firm assumption. For all I know, we’re being too harsh on the parents. Still…
Oh wow, I forgot about the cooking lessons thing. Sure it was a joke, but now I can just imagine Sweetie getting to work in the kitchen with absolutely no idea what she’s doing, and every question dismissed with a “yeah, that’s great hon.” So, eager to please as always, she follows all of her mother’s “instructions” and you get burned juice.
Aaaaaand there go my feels again.
Now that I think about it, I wonder how involved their parents really are with them. I mean, their first appearance has them leaving their younger daughter with their older one. There could be several reasons for it, but why not just take her with them?
Then again, Sweetie Belle apparently learned her cooking skills from her mother…
