Funny, there’s a lot of people who thought it came from a science accident, but not in the way you think.
 
When Twilight (of Earth-Questria) heard about the portal, she tried harnessing it’s energy, and accidentally got a copy of her alternate self’s power. In doing so, she accidentally turned herself into a pony.

She tried get rid of a pimple thru science without popping it and didn’t go with regular treatment rather with a hasty procedure. It require a big frickn laser, some chemicals, a bunch of gizmos and Spike as the one pushing buttons, it then became a horn.
