Actually, Godzilla was in the new film for 20 minutes. Hell, even in Final Wars, he was only in the opening for thirty seconds and he only had thirty minutes of screen time in a two hour long movie. Besides, I kinda liked the fact we didn’t see Godzilla that much in the new film and the fact it didn’t have that much action. When we got to the final battle, that felt all the more rewarding because there was a lot of momentum behind it.
Now, I’m not saying Pacific Rim is bad in any shape or form. It’s actually one my favorite movies from 2013. However, that movie and Godzilla 2014 are two different acquired tastes. Pacific Rim is kinda like a Chinese Buffet; plenty of food to go around but may have nasty repercussions on your bowels if you over-gorge yourself (trust me, I know what it’s like after countless visits to Fortuna Wok and Legends of Asia). The new Godzilla is like a slow-cooked steak; granted you have to be patient while it’s being prepared but the wait is all the more worth it once you sink your teeth into your first bite.
I think what makes the lack of Godzilla so jarring in this movie are two things.
That being said I loved the movie, issues and all (you don’t kill off Walter White and give us Kickass, movie!) and I look forward to the sequel.
Um, actually, Godzilla has always had less screen time than the humans. In the first 1954 film, he was only in it for 17 minutes, and most of it was dedicated to him tearing apart Tokyo.
There are even some films where Godzilla is pushed to the side a good chunk of the time (Godzilla vs. Megalon only had him show up in the third act, Godzilla vs. Mothra (the Heisei version) focused more on Mothra and Battra and Destroy All Monsters, he was barely a focus in general).
ALL the Godzilla movies do this. The main focus is always on the humans and how they try to survive.
That’s like saying Godzilla has less screen time than the humans, more compared to less screen time for Luna.
Actually, it does make sense. The Godzilla movies always focus more on the humans and less on the Kaiju. That’s pretty much how it’s been since 1954.
