Well, the drama over this has been pretty minor, and forgotten compared to other past fan-dramas. Honestly, I don’t care (as much as I like Babs) and I feel Andy’s one of the best artists on the MLP comic series.
Well, as long as said bias/opinions doesn’t bleed into the series, it’s fine, but I doubt Andy has much say-so over the stories anyways, being an artist. So it doesn’t matter.
Writer Katie’s probably going to make him draw Babs at some point, I bet, if she sees this. :P She seems to like bugging Andy sometimes.
That must mean that the trees of drama will be burning for a bit.
At least for this comment section. Heh.
I don’t think he really had you in mind.
Alot of the old Sunset hate-pics weren’t fanart though, some were macros, edits, commentaries, and such. The comments she got back then weren’t very favorable back then as they are now.
@The Twelfth Doctor Whoof
Yeah, that’s what I said, alot of fans seems to dislike at least one pony. I’ve even seen some say they hate popular ones like Derpy, or DJ just for being popular.
I haven’t seen much hate for Babs honestly, but I’ve seen a few fans who don’t like her, or feel she was a “Karmiac Houdini” however.
She did alot of mean things to the CMC, (Arguably she was even meaner then Tiara & Spoon, who for the most part are just verbal-bullies. Babs stole from them, threw tomatoes at them, threatened them if they told on her, and even kicked them out of their own clubhouse.) so some actually do wish the CMC did go through with their elaborate prank against her, (Though, that would’ve gone kinda against the nature of the show.) and felt Babs apology, and heel-face-turn wasn’t enough after all the hell she put them through.
So it’s not like there’s no reason to dislike her, I guess. Even if she was bullied, that was no real excuse for her to become a bully to, but sadly that kinda thing does happen IRL with kids.
Even if we never see Babs from Andy’s art, she’s still appeared in the comic recently, (Drawn by other artists) and will likely appear in future issues most likely.
Maybe even if writer Katie makes him to draw her. :P
Granted, this isn’t the first time Andy has said this. In fact, lots of folks seem to hate Babs. Every fan of Pony (and Andy is also a fan) has that one pony they just don’t like.
If I’d been asked that question, well I wish I could say Twilight, but actually it’s [redacted].
(seriously though, there aren’t too many ponies I dislike, not even Twilight; however, I am not much of a fan of Prince Blueblood, Braeburn, Gilda (not a pony, I know), or the Flower Trio)
It should be noted that most fanart is made by fans & fans usually like the things they are fans of. (There are exceptions to that of course.)
I think he was refering to the way he drew her. Katie Cook was the one who wrote the “Return of Queen Crysalis” story.
@OneOverTwo
Even so, Flash is still a pretty widely disliked character in the fanbase. Only other one I can think of is King Sombra.
(Whom I kinda liked personally. It was kinda nice to have a more subtle/creepy villain, instead of the usual hammy verbal kind we get in MLP.)
My point was nearly every fan has a character they dislike. I remember Sunset Shimmer used to get alot of hate to when she was first introduced. (Look at all the earlier images of her calling her a “generic alpha bitch,” and such on this site.) Ironically, nowadays most fanart of her is quite favorable.
Why they’re asking him about this, and why he’s acting like he’s “in charge” here, then? I still remember his comment about how he made Chrysalis in ‘his’ comics into “complete monster”.
The problem with the Flash Sentry analogy is that he already drew Flash in the Luna Micro.
Andy doesn’t write the stories… He’s just an artist.
I don’t think the comics are that bad personally, and honestly I love Andy’s art. (Probably my favorite artist on the comic.) Still, it is a bit disheartening to hear, especially ‘cause I kinda like Babs.
Though, I think we need to chill before we start “crucifying” & “demonizing” Andy…
Besides, nearly every fan seems to have a pony, (whether a main character, or BG/bit character) they don’t like. So it’s not like the fanbase is any different. I always see fans going “XXXX is worse pony!” or making hate-fics of certain characters.
Heck, one young girl on DA used to draw anti-Cheerilee fanart, years ago, ‘cause she thought Cheerilee was going to “steal Big Mac away from Fluttershy” in the upcoming (at the time) “Hearts & Hooves Day” episode… (Before the ep’ even premiered.)
Heck, I bet fans would cheer if Andy said “Flash Sentry” instead…
Though, personally, I can’t think of a single MLP character I dislike. (Closest would be Gilda, but I’d like to see her come back personally, so I can’t say I dislike her that much.)
A part of me thinks, “So what if he dislikes Babs, or just doesn’t want to draw her?” While another part of me thinks it’s not a good idea for a person who works on the series to say something like that, as it’ll just create drama, and anger/upset some fans.
It’s bad enough we got people accusing Meghan McCarthy of “hating” Spike when she said repeatedly she doesn’t.
I’ll be honest, I lost faith in the professionalism of the comics come Issue #11. The previous two were already showing signs of personal ideas leaking into both the writing and the artwork.
Obviously Andy isn’t a PR guy. And Hasbro/IDW probably don’t think that a comic series needs a PR specialist. Tweets like this that don’t have an obvious motive behind (leading to speculation such as this) them seem to indicate that maybe they do. At the very least, it would be nice to get some actual elaboration from him.
I was goin’ to just throw a muffin at him.
Maybe he finds her hard to draw, or something? (Like I said she doesn’t use the show’s “standard young filly model,” and looks slightly different.)
So, It might not be related to “bias/dislike” of said character.
Y’know, Ian Flynn main writer of the Sonic comics (sense 2006) admitted he didn’t like Marine the raccoon much, but still admits she’s funny, alot of fun to write for, and still uses her in the comics sometimes. (And also because some fans like her.)
Ian said he tries not to let his “personal opinions” of the Sonic series influence how he writes the comics. I think that’s a more professional way of handling it.
@Animegx43
That would’ve been funnier admittedly. (Though, he did draw Fluffle Puff a popular fan-OC recently.)
That needs an “OBJECTION” on it.
I honestly don’t think it’s undeserved. He didn’t say ‘If I really had to choose’, or ‘It’s a tough decision’.
It really does sound like that he would do so if he was allowed to, not forced to.
Let’s not do anything drastic… Besides, he gets enough bashing from some fans as it is. (Especially, after the controversial “Reflections” arc.)
He might be kidding, but it’s hard to say, considering all of Babs appearances (even brief cameos) were in issues NOT drawn by him.
Y’know, one thing I think they should never admit is being biased against a certain character, or not liking one. It doesn’t seem very professional to me, and some people in this fanbase tend to overreact to “haters.”
Now we’re going to get alot of “Andy hates Babs!” drama… (Though, honestly, I don’t see what’s wrong with Babs. Even Meghan McCarthy said she finds her adorable.)
It’s bad enough some guy here said he hated Andy for his satirical sketches of Spike, and was accusing him of hating Spike with no real proof. (Despite the fact he made sketches poking fun at every other character to.)
