I take it one step sideways. The reason nobody hatched the egg? It was a fake. Twilight not only hatched the egg, but only after turning it into a real dragon’s egg.

My headcanon’s similar, but I take it one step further: Celestia cast a spell on Spike’s egg to keep it from hatching. It could thus only be hatched by a unicorn with magic as strong as her own. Basically, Celestia was testing to see if she had any potential rivals.

“And heah we get a glimpse of one of the things that make unicohns really impressive, their ability ta use magic to lift objects several times theah own size and weight. Beautiful!”

It’s funny because Sunset Shimmer wanted control and power.
 
So she naturally grabs the figure with the most control and power.

okay i like this. expectations were altered and in a way i love.

My headcanon is that Spike’s egg had been used as SS’s test (and for several other potential candidates) - it was never meant to be opened, but used to see what strategy a gifted unicorn would do to try to open it. Aka Cele’s Kobiyashi Maru test.
 
Twilight just f’d it all up when her magic exploded everything then.

I’ll buy that.
