Okay, Platonic philosophy time–Every object has two aspects, namely Form and Substance. Form is what we perceive by the senses. Substance, however, is the essential nature of an object, what it “is” independent of what we perceive it to be. For example, chairs come in all sizes, shapes, and materials, and yet even though they have different Forms, they all share the same Substance, namely that of “chairness”.
 
Hello Kitty may have the Form of a cartoon girl who is bipedal, wears clothes, and goes to elementary school in Great Britain, but in Substance she’s still a cat.
