[SPOILERS!]  
In the latest Project Horizons, Rarity is testing a new spell and has Snips use it to split Octavia’s soul in two, placing the second part in the cello making it a “soul jar”. This makes the cello indestructible but is a very painful procedure.
 
It’s very hard to explain if you haven’t read the previous 47 chapters…

Haven’t read EH yet, but that explanation also makes me think of the Stradivarius violin from Fallout 3. That one didn’t have a soul in it, though.

Th main character of Project Horizons picked it up fairly early on, and only recently found out that it still has a piece of her soul in it.
