There’s a couple things that PK does well:

  • Backgrounds. She knows how to do these, not even just the details but the gradients, etc.
  • She captures the way the show draws out the vector outlines. One of the big things in vectors (at least, speaking as a member of the MLPVC) is the stroke thinkness of outline elements. The ‘‘show’’ doesn’t bother too much on this (eg look at decent closeup of, say, Pinkie’s mane or tail) for sake of building out flash puppets that will likely have larger gross errors when animated (like non-tapered line ends, etc.); while for vector artists, we try to make all those lines the same thickness since we have the time to do the static shot. PK is somewhere inbetween, which allows her to have a fast turnaround that does capture the show well enough.

But I think there’s also other details that I can’t immediately exactly say that call out to me a PK pic over others, I think it has something to do with the eyes, as her characters seem to come off more brighter (not in color, but personality) due to how she draws.

Show-style character vectors are pretty easy, but it’s all the little details and elaborate shading she puts in that are really time-consuming and can be hard to get right.

If I were drawing this scene I’d probably spend 2 or 3 times as much on the background as on Derpy, with all those color gradients, bushes, flowers, and grass strokes.

The nice thing is once you’ve done enough of them you have a big library of stock body shapes and objects saved up that it takes far less time to throw something together.
