I say it is more of a heart-wrenching scene. It really breaks the heart to see what the Sovereigns did to try and stop Tirec.

Making the ultimate sacrifice of their magic is something the Princesses had to do, and it was truly heartbreaking…
 
Even if Tirec chose to keep them around instead of leaving them in Cerberus’ care, they still get their magic and Cutie Marks back upon his re-imprisonment by the Magic of Friendship.
 
Cerberus only ended up earning some Brownie Points for taking care of the Princesses, then prepared to give Tirec some much awaited chew toy treatment for what he did.
