A Mile in my Horseshoes
-After an extremely heated argument between Diamond Tiara and Apple Bloom over whose life was more difficult (Diamond being a wealthy heiress with her life already decided and laid out for her, who hardly sees her own father due to his job. Apple Bloom being a farmfilly with no idea about what her future even is, but has had the love of her Grandmother and older siblings for most of her days.) Sweetie Belle came up with a good solution for the two.
Spend a week living the other’s life from their point of view.
This included spending time among the ponies that the other normally would. Both fillies rejected the idea. However, when Applejack and Filthy Rich both learned of the plan, the older ponies persuaded the two to give it a go. Begrudgingly, the two young earth ponies agreed to it.
It was only after Sweetie and Silver Spoon gave the two their “lifestyle makeovers” that the idea of switching lives truly began to sink in.

Well, nice to see I’m not the only one who feels that way. There are very few fics that portray Spoon as “snooty” as she is in the show, and such, because of that bias unfortunately. She feels OOC to me that way in most fics…
Though, I don’t read MLP fics all that often honestly, but I like how Spoon was handled in a few though like “Why Am I Crying?” where Spoon was shown as sympathetic yet still a li’l bratty.
I think it’s because of that trope of the “evil villain’s sidekick turning good” (like say Scorpan in the original G1 MLP pilot movie from the ‘80s) is quite common in Western animation. Some cases it works, like Iago from Aladdin, but it just feels kinda cheap, and overdone with Silver Spoon, when she hasn’t really been shown in the show to be any less “nicer” then Spoon, and is just as bratty/snooty.
(Aside from that one time she applauded Granny Smith in “Family Appreciation Day,” but prior to that she was also trying to make AB ashamed/embarrassed of her Granny like when she went “Hiiiii!” to AB & Granny in a sarcastic way.)
I mean I’m not against either of them pulling a “heel-face turn,” but as you said why is Tiara not redeemable, yet Spoon is to fans? I guess it’s ‘cause she’s the “sidekick,” and because of that common trope I mentioned.
Also, some fans seem to think Tiara “crossed the moral event horizon” when she mocked Scoots’ inability to fly, but forget Spoon helped her do that to, because like Tiara she wanted to discourage the CMC from winning.
Yeah, the “Silver is redeemable but Tiara is despicable” thinking just makes me aggravated- in fanfic(though I can accept it there, if the rest of the story is good), but even more when I see reviewers of the show on youtube talk about how they think this, and I just sit there questioning their skills at observing.
I read a li’l of it, and it’s just “ok,” but some things kinda bug me about it. (Like using the typical “Silver isn’t really a bully, and just acts mean for Tiara” thing, which always seemed like a cheap way to make her a more sympathetic character to me. It also seems odd people are quick to forgive Spoon’s bullying more then Tiara, and forget she was just as mean to the CMC in the show.)
It also goes ironically in the opposite direction of the original artist’s version here. >>658933 (With Bloom & Tiara actually quickly enjoying each other’s lives instead.) So it lacks build-up for it’s events.
…It also gets quite weird in the third chapter with the “Refinement session.”
This one?
It looks like your wish has been granted.
Well, to be fair I wasn’t interpreting the scene based on personal experiences but rather based on similar scenes in various sitcoms and such.
The whole thing looked like one of those setups where one character (Diamond) is trying to follow a diet and gets themself a ‘suitable’ dessert while the other (Silver) gets themselves the most unhealthy but goddamn delicious looking dessert there is to taunt them. Character one (Diamond) eventually gives in to the hunger and goes for their friend’s dessert, only to be shot down when character two (Silver) prevents it and then rubs their nose in how good the unhealthy dessert is.
It’s not a direct comparison, I know, but it is the kind of thing the Diamond/Silver scene made me think of - which is why I interpreted it as two friends taking the kind of liberties with each other that only friends would, rather than the claims made by some people that Diamond was bullying Silver.
Also… yes. I’m totally down with Silver being old money and Diamond being new money.
Pretty much agree with your comments on the rest too.
“Then we got the scene from Pinkie Pride where, though some used it to call Diamond a b***h, to me looked like two friends messing with each other more than anything.”
Because they never had any meaningful friends to relate to such a situation and most who spend time online tend to feel jealous or confused over these two’s friendships. It’s far too alien for them to comprehend why Silver Spoon, who is more old money as the imply shows thus being more naturally snooty and proud, with Diamond Tiara who is normal filly whose Dad runs a business who is just filthy rich.
Who knows, seems we’ll get a backstory episode as to why those two even became ‘bullies’ in the first place.
Honestly, they are just shown as sheltered and spoiled fillies who just have a warped sense of how ponies view other ponies based on wealth and what important ponies they know.
Can’t blame them when you look at places like Canterlotians. Sweet and Eliete and Gala were some nice looks into how these two very impressionable fillies could get such warped views from reading popular culture magazines from Photo Finish and models like Fleur Delis.
I like the rivalry they have with the CMC, Flight to the Finish really fumbled the ball with having to have Dash fix everything for them then to have the CMC resolve it themselves and just beat out DT and SS’ performance which was supposed to be the only one that could beat DT and SS.
I much prefer what they did with Ponyville Confidential where she was having fun and encouraging the CMC and throwing tantrums when she wasn’t getting her way.
And Twilight Time because it finally showed more of Sweetie’s manipulative side and APple Bloom’s paranoia when it comes to DT and SS always judging her and making fun of her. Only to end up the CMC were just using everypony and yet had no intentions of actually telling them they couldn’t be a part of Twilight Time. Sweetie Belle just got too carried away with wanting to be POPULAR, POPULAR AS CAN BE.
Hopefully we get more episodes like those two in the future. Especially since DT and SS are RARE, UNIQUE, and SPECIAL in their own way, as the Princess of Friendship Twilight Sparkle proclaimed them all to be in the finale! XD
If only they had done this as an episode instead. Hopefully for S5, hopefully.
Great job Niggerfaggot. Do more.
Total agreement.
I long for an ep which uses Diamond or Silver as more than just ‘generic bullies’. Bad Seed sort of took steps in that direction with them being friends with Babs, but the CMC PoV meant it wasn’t really explored much at all. Then we got the scene from Pinkie Pride where, though some used it to call Diamond a b***h, to me looked like two friends messing with each other more than anything.
And yet, despite their numerous appearances… we really still know nothing about either filly beyond ‘they’re bullies’.
An ep like this would be a good way to hit the subject as well as throw up some kind of ‘grass is always greener’ or ‘different people have different troubles’ moral.
@monolyth
The artist? :P
Plus love both their new looks/outfits.
Tonight….
Them.
Right.
