Not actually the case with Yotsubato.
To be fair, she was being ungrateful towards them.
That said, I would love to read a fanfic like that.
If you care, it is a style call ‘4koma’ and is similar to the “funny pages” from U.S. newspapers.
Sometimes they are used as “non-canon” joke comics included with the rest of the manga, while other times (ex: Azumanga Daioh, Yotsubato) they are used for the entirety of the the series.
